Position Overview:
This role involves providing specialized care for patients with ostomies, wounds, fistulas, and skin issues resulting from various medical conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Deliver follow-up care and interventions for patients with ostomies, draining wounds, and related skin breakdowns due to pressure, incontinence, and other health issues.
2. Offer direct patient counseling for individuals preparing for surgeries that may lead to stoma creation, and provide tailored guidance for those with existing abdominal stomas.
3. Assist patients throughout their care journey, evaluating and recommending appropriate products for ostomy, continence, and wound management.
4. Assess individual patient needs and goals, and conduct educational sessions for healthcare professionals on effective ostomy and wound care management.
5. Facilitate ongoing educational programs for medical staff to ensure adherence to current standards of practice for ostomy patients.
6. Provide comprehensive teaching and support to patients and their families regarding self-management of ostomy and wound care.
Qualifications:
Experience:
Minimum of 1 year of clinical nursing experience as a Registered Nurse, specifically in caring for patients with abdominal stomas, draining wounds, and pressure ulcers.
Bachelor's Degree
Completion of an accredited Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nursing (WOCN) program.
Licensure and Certification:
Registered Nurse License (California)
Wound Care Nurse Certification from the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board
Basic Life Support Certification
Ostomy Care Nurse Certification from the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board
Additional Requirements:
Demonstrated understanding of patient education principles for both pediatric and adult populations.
Knowledge of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and integumentary systems, including relevant pathophysiology.
Strong communication skills and fine motor dexterity.
Certification as a Certified Continence Nurse (CCCN) may be required as per departmental specifications.
Preferred Qualifications:
Current Board Certification in Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nursing (CWOCN).
