Job Summary

To provide high-quality, age-specific patient care functions for assigned clinical areas at the University of Texas Medical Branch.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with patient flow within assigned outpatient clinic settings.
  • Respond promptly to call-lights and provide comfort measures to patients and families.
  • Perform technical and supportive patient care skills, incorporating the patient's plan of care and following approved policy and procedure.
  • Obtain vital signs, document chief complaints, and collect excretory specimens.
  • Use aseptic techniques and infection control measures in the performance of duties.
  • Accurately perform tests, such as basic urine chemistry using chemical strips, guaiac, Ph, blood glucose, UPT, and hemocult.
  • Measure and record intake and output as ordered.
  • Prepare and assist patients undergoing treatments, examinations, and procedures.
  • Recognize patient care priorities, treatment plans, objectives, and potential crises.
  • Under the direction of a physician, provide other treatments and care to patients appropriate to training, as assigned.
  • Communicate patient needs and unusual occurrences with patients and families.
  • Refill patient medications as requested, using guidelines for the prescribing physician/provider in their assigned area and in accordance with policy C51, Prescription Refill Management for Ambulatory Care Services.
  • Safely and properly administer medications as assigned.
  • Accurately document and communicate interventions and measurements.
  • Communicate relevant information to appropriate healthcare providers.
  • Under supervision, complete accurate, concise, and legible documentation on patient clinic records.
  • Assist with medication reconciliation as required.
  • Assist in maintaining equipment, supplies, and the environment.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment.
  • Check equipment and supplies for expiration dates, electrical safety tags, intactness, and usability.
  • Clean equipment and return it to its proper place.
  • Report equipment and supplies needing replaced or repaired.
  • Stock rooms, carts, cabinets, etc., as assigned or requested.
  • Respect and support patient rights, serving as a patient and family advocate.
  • Practice principles of patient and employee confidentiality.
  • Utilize available resources and seek assistance in dealing with ethical dilemmas, as appropriate.
  • Practice positive customer peer relations, consistently communicating in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Report and seek assistance in dealing with guest complaints or concerns.
  • Establish and maintain a positive rapport with patients, families, and coworkers.
  • Consistently respond to customer requests and needs in an appropriate manner.
  • Participate in and support continuous quality improvement activities at the clinic and departmental levels, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate acceptable productivity and practice cost containment, prioritizing and completing all work in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Demonstrate initiative, resourcefulness, and flexibility.
  • Effectively and efficiently use time, equipment, and supplies.
  • Function as an interdependent and supportive team member, providing support and assistance as appropriate.
  • Remain calm and purposeful, responding in an appropriate and professional manner in emergent or chaotic situations.
  • Participate in clinic meetings and activities, supporting the clinical, departmental, and organizational philosophy and goals.
  • Accept responsibility for own growth and development.
  • Participate in in-services and ongoing education programs.
  • Remain current on all in-service, education, credentials, and certification requirements for the position, as appropriate.
  • Exchange constructive feedback with peers and others.
