Position Highlights:

This role is pivotal in fostering constructive Employee Relations by aiding in the formulation and execution of employee relations initiatives within the Union. The appointed representative will develop, implement, and uphold union agreements to nurture positive interactions with union personnel and the union itself. Collaborating with leadership and departmental supervisors, the representative will work to enhance commitment among staff, aligning with organizational objectives. By addressing the concerns of Union Membership at the departmental level, this position serves as a strategic source of information and support for management to resolve issues effectively. Engaging in activities that promote Employee Relations as a valuable and approachable resource for all Union members is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Offer expert advice, information, and support to Union leadership regarding policy administration, performance evaluations, contract interpretation, and grievance matters across various departments, including those that are politically sensitive.
  • Address inquiries and challenges related to policy interpretation and execution. Conduct thorough investigations into raised issues, compiling relevant data to inform recommendations. Interpret collective bargaining agreements for union members while ensuring consistency and considering historical practices.
  • Identify legally sensitive matters and escalate them to supervisors or legal counsel as necessary. Collaborate with Human Resources to resolve employee relations challenges and provide guidance to management on documentation and disciplinary procedures.
  • Oversee the grievance process for both union and non-union staff, facilitating discussions to settle disputes. Prepare departmental representatives for grievance meetings and act as an impartial mediator in third-step grievances initiated by union members.
  • Determine which cases warrant arbitration and execute appropriate agreements for grievance settlements. Prepare comprehensive analyses for arbitration cases, outlining the strengths and weaknesses of both parties' positions.
  • Assist Legal Counsel in preparation for arbitration and represent the Union in third-party proceedings as needed. Provide testimony on behalf of the Union in arbitration cases, particularly those involving procedural disputes or policy interpretation.
  • Engage in negotiations with clients as required, identifying potential issues and analyzing the feasibility of union proposals. Develop counter-proposals as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of work output and the status of assigned grievances and arbitrations within the Grievance Log.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in Human Resources Management or Labor Relations is preferred, alongside a minimum of five years of progressive experience in Human Resources, with at least three years in Employee & Labor Relations. Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience within a union environment is required.

Job Type: Full-time

Compensation: $105,000 - $112,000 annually
