Key Qualifications:
• Education: Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) is required. Completion of clinical internship and residency is mandatory, with fellowship training preferred.
• Certifications: In addition to Basic Life Support, candidates must provide evidence of approved continuing medical/health education. A current BLS certification is required, with the card displaying the emblem of the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, or Military Training Network. Note that web-based classes do not fulfill the required standards.
**Work Schedule: 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, no on-call duties**
Experience Requirements:
The ideal candidate should possess a minimum of 35 hours of direct patient care within the past year and at least 5 years of experience over the last decade as a privileged flight surgeon at a U.S. Military installation. Relevant experience includes:
- Familiarity with U.S. military medical standards for conducting special operational evaluations, including periodic health assessments for flyers and special duty personnel.
- Expertise in aeromedical dispositions for flying and special operational duties.
- Conducting adaptability rating assessments for military special duty applicants.
- Applying medical, fitness, and profiling standards in accordance with AFIs 48-123.
Board Certification: Current board certification in Aerospace Medicine is highly recommended. If not board certified, proof of completion of any medical residency program along with a minimum of 5 years of U.S. military Flight Surgeon experience is required.
Licensure/Registration: Candidates must possess and maintain a current U.S. Medical License and NPI Certification/Registration.
Healthcare Worker Duties:
The flight medicine physician will be responsible for providing healthcare to U.S. and Foreign Military Service members and their families assigned to the Flight Medicine Clinic or Occupational Health Clinic. Responsibilities include:
- Performing primary care and occupational health clinician duties along with associated administrative tasks.
- Delivering comprehensive health maintenance and medical care, including preventive medicine, behavioral health, occupational health, and community health.
- Potentially serving as the primary care manager (PCM) for a panel of patients, overseeing their health and wellness.
Core Responsibilities:
- Conducting patient examinations and formulating differential diagnostic plans.
- Ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic tests and examination findings.
- Implementing treatment plans and determining the need for consultations.
- Approving or disapproving subspecialty referrals and directing case management activities.
- Providing primary and secondary preventive maintenance care.
- Participating in patient care reports, meetings, and professional activities relevant to assigned cases.
Note: Civilian flight medicine physicians will not engage in flying duties or participate in exercises beyond the scope of their medical care privileges. They may respond to HAZMAT and in-flight emergencies as credentialed professionals. After-hours coverage will only be provided if requested by local authorities and specified in local contracts.
