Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY: The Culinary department at Cleveland Area Hospital Inc is committed to delivering nutritious and appetizing meals to our patients, staff, and visitors, while ensuring customer satisfaction and compliance with facility policies and state regulations. The Culinary Specialist role involves the preparation and provision of meals for our hospital community, emphasizing nutritional quality, customer satisfaction, and the creation of high-caliber dishes.

To succeed in this role, an individual must effectively perform each essential function, with or without reasonable accommodation. Reasonable accommodations may be provided to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to fulfill essential duties.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Prepare meals for hospital patients, staff, visitors, and catering in accordance with facility policies and state regulations.
  2. Utilize, inspect, and maintain kitchen equipment, appliances, and work areas following standard operating procedures, facility policies, and state regulations.
  3. Promptly identify and communicate repair and maintenance needs to the culinary team lead.
  4. Wash dishes, glassware, flatware, pots, pans, etc., using commercial dishwashing equipment or by hand.
  5. Foster a positive work environment through teamwork, encouragement, integrity, and conflict resolution.
  6. Communicate respectfully and clearly with hospital patients, staff, and visitors.
  7. Manage inventory by stocking and rotating supplies in compliance with facility policies and state regulations.
  8. Adhere to all organizational policies, including but not limited to job descriptions, certification/licensure requirements, mission statements, HIPAA, confidentiality standards, and patient rights.
  9. Actively engage with and stay informed about the organization's communications and directives.
  10. Participate in hospital and department training sessions.
  11. Assist the culinary team lead in identifying and addressing issues related to quality, safety, productivity, cost control, portion management, waste, etc.
  12. Support the culinary team lead with special projects as needed.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Hand Trucks, Lifts, & Carts

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Five years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Oklahoma Food Handlers Permit or to be obtained within one week of employment.
  • Proficiency in using a computer for tasks such as checking/sending emails and creating documents in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and communicate oral and written instructions.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

  • Experience in a commercial kitchen, including but not limited to:
    • A strong understanding of knife skills, food safety, time management, food waste management, and various commercial kitchen equipment.
    • The capability to prepare and cook a variety of foods and dishes, utilizing diverse flavor profiles with herbs, spices, and sauces.
    • The ability to read and interpret standardized recipes and perform mathematical calculations related to food preparation and recipe adjustments.
  • Certified Dietary Manager Certification preferred but not mandatory.

WORK SHIFT(S):

  • This position requires rotating weekend shifts as the kitchen operates seven days a week.
  • Participation in monthly department in-service meetings is a requirement, typically scheduled for evenings on weekdays.

CONFIDENTIALITY RESPONSIBILITY:

This position may have access to patient confidential records and must adhere to HIPAA regulations and Compliance Policies.

WORKING CONDITIONS – PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The following physical and mental demands are necessary for the Culinary Specialist role:

Occasional = 33% Frequent = 66% Continuous = 100%

  • Continuous: Must be able to remain on feet while walking, standing, and transporting food, equipment, and supplies.
  • Continuous: Must be able to lift and transfer a minimum of 50 pounds and exert a minimum of 50 pounds of push/pull force while using proper body mechanics.
  • Continuous: Must be able to reach, bend, and stretch while employing good body mechanics.
  • Continuous: Must utilize effective listening, communication, and visual skills when navigating the kitchen and handling food, equipment, and supplies.
  • Continuous: Must operate various kitchen equipment safely.
  • May be exposed to communicable diseases.
