Job Description

The Maize Greenhouse Manager performs duties related to the cultivation and maintenance of research plants at the University of Missouri-Columbia's Maize greenhouse/growth facility. The ideal candidate will ensure optimal growth conditions for maize and effectively communicate with colleagues to support research projects.


Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:



  • Providing research plants with the optimal environment and inputs to achieve maximum health.
  • Maintaining real-time data records in Solis and GH systems.
  • Monitoring for insects and informing the GH director of the need for pesticide sprays.
  • Planting, transplanting, and crossing, ensuring seed purity of the next generation.
  • Maintaining a clean growing environment, including cleaning and sanitizing work surfaces and floors.
  • Properly disposing of regulated plant waste material.
  • Utilizing digital communication and notebook systems to communicate with colleagues and keep records.
  • Ensuring a safe and compliant work environment.
  • Maintaining watering and fertilization regimes as outlined in specific SOPs.
  • Maintaining infrastructure, including general care of horticultural tools and equipment.
  • Assisting with experimental trials to optimize crop growth and production systems.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess:



  • Experience in maize cultivation and crossing within a controlled environment.
  • Basic understanding of Controlled Environment operations, control, and maintenance.
  • High attention to detail and ability to quickly learn new tasks and concepts.
  • Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with scientific personnel and onsite production staff.
  • Fundamental understanding of plant cultivation and propagation techniques, soils, and water management.
  • Ability to learn and apply Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program procedures and best practices.
  • Competence using MS Office and web-based software to track and create tasks, generate reports, and compile data.
  • Ability to work in a physically challenging environment, including hot and humid conditions, and lift heavy objects.

Qualifications

The candidate should have:



  • An associate degree or higher in Horticulture or a related field.
  • A minimum of 6 months of hands-on experience in maize production, especially in a greenhouse/controlled environment setting.
  • An equivalent combination of skills, education, and experience may be considered.
