Job Summary:
As a Surgical Technologist with Kaiser Permanente, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of our operating rooms. Your primary responsibility will be to assist surgeons and other medical professionals during surgical procedures, maintaining a sterile environment and adhering to strict protocols to ensure patient safety and satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Preoperative planning and preparation:

You will be responsible for collecting and analyzing data to prepare for surgeries, working closely with surgeons and other healthcare professionals to ensure a seamless process. This will involve reviewing medical records, consulting with other team members, and identifying potential health status deviations or problems.

You will also be responsible for understanding preoperative diagnoses, common complications, and operative pathology related to specific surgical procedures, using your knowledge of basic sciences and procedures to inform your work.

Additionally, you will be responsible for maintaining current surgical procedure manuals and/or cards that enumerate surgeons' preferences.


  • Environmental safety and infection control:

You will be responsible for maintaining a safe and clean environment in the operating room, ensuring that all equipment is in working order and reporting any unsafe conditions to the appropriate personnel. You will also be responsible for verifying the integrity and sterility of sterile packages, opening supplies aseptically, and establishing and maintaining a sterile field.

Furthermore, you will be responsible for demonstrating correct body mechanics and complying with policies, procedures, and recommended practices related to the use, care, and maintenance of supplies and equipment.


Communication, Coordination of Care & Orientation:

You will be responsible for demonstrating effective communication skills with patients, families, and other healthcare team members, as well as cooperating and communicating effectively with other healthcare professionals to accomplish unit workload.

You will also be responsible for establishing and maintaining effective communication with your supervisor.


  • Proficient performance of assigned functions:

You will be responsible for identifying breaks in sterile technique and correcting or reporting them to the appropriate personnel. You will also be responsible for displaying dexterity in the use of surgical instruments throughout procedures, preparing and knowing the specific uses of all needed equipment and supplies, and maintaining a neat and orderly sterile field as dictated by the sequence of the procedure.

Additionally, you will be responsible for participating in counting procedures per established policy at the appropriate times during surgical procedures.


  • Teamwork:

You will be responsible for demonstrating interpersonal skills, including observation of behavior, effectiveness of communication, acceptance of criticism, and willingness to help others. You will also be responsible for maintaining interpersonal relationships characterized by trust, honesty, confidence, and respect.

You will work collaboratively with other healthcare team members to meet expectations and job functions, sharing pertinent patient data and seeking information to maintain high efficiency.


  • Professional Development:

You will be responsible for taking responsibility for your ongoing education and professional development, identifying formal and informal opportunities, and initiating activities to achieve your goals. You will also be responsible for collaborating with your unit manager or designee in completing self and colleague/team performance reviews, adhering to KFHPW policies on attendance and punctuality, and participating in staff orientation and student activities.

Furthermore, you will be responsible for applying the QA/I process to care delivery, promoting and participating in professional meetings, conferences, and groups to keep current in Surgical Technology, and passing both Competency requirements for clinical staff and unit-specific competencies annually.

  • Graduate of approved school of Surgical Technology or equivalent Hospital or Armed Forces training.
License, Certification, Registration

  • Surgical Technologist Registration (Washington)
  • Basic Life Support required at hire

Additional Requirements:

  • Communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional affiliation and certification is preferred by date of hire/transfer.
  • Minimum two (2) years of current continuous O.R. experience in surgical specialty.
