Nursing Program Specialist Job Description

This is a professional nursing position with the Department of Health in Martin County. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with clinic physicians and APRNs, coordinating activities, aiding, and providing backup as appropriate to ensure the overall effectiveness of nursing and Public Health services.

Responsibilities:
  • Provides nursing support in the clinic area by assisting providers with exams, treatments, and procedures.
  • Assists physician and APRN in clinic setting by performing nursing assessments, client interviews, counseling, referrals, and providing education on STDs testing and treatment, HIV, TB, and Family Planning.
  • Takes client medical history, height, weight, and vital signs and documents on appropriate forms and in clients electronic health record (EHR).
  • Documents in HMS (clients electronic medical record) in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Performs diagnostic tests and venipunctures, collects, and processes laboratory specimens, and enters correctly into Emdeon electronic lab system.
  • Provides medications and treatments as directed by licensed medical professionals per agency policy, procedures, and RN protocols.
  • Provides case management services in the coordination of client care with providers orders.
  • Assists with referrals to physician specialists and outside agencies.
  • Autonomously runs the RN Protocol schedule under the direction of the physician and APRN.
  • Communicates both verbally and in writing potential clinic problems, recommends solutions, and changes to physician and APRN notified.
  • Codes encounter forms correctly and appropriately in all programs.
  • Oversees restocking of exam rooms maintaining adequate operating levels.
  • Cleans, packages, and sterilizes instruments as needed.
  • Serves as backup to the Nurse Program Specialist in the Medication room following established policy and procedures.
  • Provides Immunization clinic coverage and assists Nurse Program Specialist with vaccine administration in the immunization clinic when needed.
  • Assists the Nurse Program Specialist with inventory of the medication and vaccine storage rooms.
  • Assesses pediatric and adult clients for immunization needs, transcribes vaccine records, administers vaccines, and documents in FL Shots and HMS all immunization services provided.
  • Checks vaccine expiration dates, rotates inventory, and transfers expiring vaccines to other DOH counties or facilities before expiration.
  • Maintains 100% accountability of all vaccines in all programs (PC 01, 05, 09, 17).
  • Checks and documents vaccine storage unit temperatures twice daily (in AM and PM) in the absence of the Nurse Program Specialist.
  • Assists the Nurse Program Specialist with Employee Wellness for DOH Martin offering and providing immunizations, annual flu, and TB annual screening/testing.
  • Attends the Treasure Coast Immunization Coalition meeting or any other scheduled immunization meetings.
Requirements:
  • Ability to operate a computer and experience with electronic health systems.
  • Skill in interpersonal relationships.
  • Adheres to state statutes, rules, and regulations, practices, and adheres to procedures as they pertain to each of the programs functional areas.
Qualifications:
  • Willing to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours, or days in the event of an emergency, outbreak, or unusual circumstance.
  • A current active Registered Nurse license or a Multistate RN license from another compact state.
  • A valid Florida driver's license.
