Job Summary

The Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management directs the overall department clinical care and assures its quality as dictated by the principle of good medicine and by the regulation of oversight bodies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Directs the day-to-day operations of the department, including clinical and administrative activities.
  • Ensures the quality of care provided by the department's clinical staff.
  • Assures smooth integration of departmental clinical and educational programs throughout Cook County Health.
  • Develops and implements departmental policies and procedures.
  • Leads strategic planning for the department, ensuring coordination and compatibility with the CCH strategic plan.
  • Oversees provider productivity and reviews clinical outcomes.
  • Develops and updates medical care protocols and procedures.
  • Ensures continuous readiness and provides a leadership role for accreditation and other regulatory compliance visits.
Requirements
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Licensed as a Physician and Surgeon in the State of Illinois prior to starting employment.
  • Board Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA).
  • Seven (7) years of work experience after residency training as a practicing physician, clinician educator, or clinician researcher.
  • Five (5) years of supervisory and administrative experience in an Anesthesiology department.
  • Two (2) years of experience with resident and student education.
  • Valid Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Subspecialty training in Anesthesia, Critical Care, Neuro, Pain, or Pediatrics.
  • Three (3) years prior experience as Division Chair.
  • Five (5) years of academic involvement in residency or fellowship training.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
  • Knowledge of quality assurance principles and guidelines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups.
  • Strong interpersonal and empathy skills.
  • Demonstrate clinical research skills and techniques for extracting and reporting information.
  • Demonstrate analytical and organizational, problem-solving, critical thinking, and conflict management/resolution skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach, educate (ACGME) and research grant programs.
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and stressful environment.
  • Ability to adhere to department policies and standards utilizing best practices.
