Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Mechanic to join our team at the California Department of Education. As a key member of our transportation department, you will be responsible for leading a crew of mechanics in the repair and maintenance of our fleet of buses and heavy-duty equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and work with a team of mechanics to diagnose and repair complex mechanical malfunctions
  • Supervise the diagnosing, scheduling, and repair of district vehicles and equipment
  • Plan and assign work to a small group of mechanics
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment
  • Develop and implement an effective preventive maintenance program
  • Ensure that repairs meet mandated safety standards
  • Collaborate with colleagues to promote high standards of safety and good housekeeping methods
  • Respond to service calls and accidents, making emergency repairs or towing buses or vehicles as needed
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by training and experience in automotive and heavy-duty equipment repair
  • Valid California Class B driver's license or higher
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language
  • Strong problem-solving and leadership skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others
Working Conditions

This position requires working in a shop environment, with frequent exposure to noise and fumes from equipment operation. The incumbent must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull heavy objects, and work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities.
