Job Overview

Position: Traveling Fiber Testing Specialist

Employment Type: Full-time W2 - Fiber Technician

Work Environment: This is a traveling position across various locations.

Salary: $35 - $45 per hour, with a daily hotel per diem of $100. Additional per diem for tools and transportation based on the equipment used.

Note: Candidates must possess valid US work authorization; visa sponsorship is not available.

Essential Qualifications
  • Proven experience in the telecommunications sector or a related field; training is not provided.
  • Must supply a personal work vehicle (truck, van, or large SUV).
Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive fiber testing and characterization.
  • Maintain accurate work and maintenance logs within company systems.
  • Plan and organize jobs, determining necessary materials and resources.
  • Interpret work orders, wiring diagrams, and equipment schematics, adhering to standard operational practices.
  • Work flexible hours, including potential overtime, weekends, and holidays.
General Duties

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing fiber characterization tests, including:
    • Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD)
    • Chromatic Dispersion (CD)
    • Attenuation Profile (AP)
    • Optical Return Loss (ORL)
    • Utilizing various OTDR functions. The deliverable to clients is a complete set of fiber characterization results as specified at the time of request. Proficiency in the safe operation of testing equipment is essential.
  • Must hold a valid state driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including nights and weekends as needed.
  • Travel between Central Office locations.
  • Capability to work at heights (e.g., using extension ladders).
  • Ability to work in confined spaces such as manholes.
  • Skilled in identifying and repairing fiber optic splices.
Preferred Experience
  • Testing experience with ROADM or IOF fibers.
  • Proficient in diagnosing fiber issues and conducting routine tests, including fiber measurement and repair using Fusion Splicer and OTDR.
  • Experience working with live fiber.
  • Ability to read Fiber MDF in Central Offices.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
