Role of the Physician Assistant

The Physician Assistant collaborates with both the supervising physician(s) and consulting physician(s) to develop, implement, assess, and modify healthcare program plans. This role is crucial in identifying normal versus abnormal findings, allowing for the early detection of serious physical, emotional, or mental health issues.

The incumbent will manage the daily operations of the clinic, which includes conducting daily sick calls, gathering health and developmental histories from patients, documenting findings, and making critical assessments.

As the primary healthcare provider, the Physician Assistant addresses routine evaluations for new complaints, manages ongoing visits for chronic conditions, and responds to emergencies as clinically necessary.

This position requires establishing diagnostic impressions and ordering appropriate diagnostic tests, including laboratory work, imaging studies, and other evaluations. The ability to interpret results from various diagnostic modalities, such as Clinical Laboratory, Radiology, Optometry, Electrocardiography, Dental, and Mental Health, is essential.

The Physician Assistant evaluates the comprehensive healthcare needs of patients and formulates plans to address these needs. Decisions regarding patient medical care are made in conjunction with the supervising physician.

Additionally, the incumbent assists supervisory physician(s) in managing chronic health issues and supports them in conducting thorough diagnoses and treatments.

Education and demonstration of effective health practices to patients are key responsibilities. The Physician Assistant will work collaboratively with the physician to manage selected complex medical cases.

As with all personnel in correctional institutions, the incumbent holds a critical responsibility for maintaining the security of the facility. The correctional duties take precedence over all other responsibilities associated with this position and are performed regularly.
