Job Description and Duties

The Department of Food and Agriculture is seeking a highly skilled Senior Environmental Scientist to join our team. As a key member of our Environmental Program, you will be responsible for supervising professional and technical staff, consolidating analytical data, and preparing monthly reports and technical documents.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Plan, organize, and direct program activities and assignments to appropriate staff and provide daily supervision.
  • Maintain a high-quality work environment by promoting teamwork and development of employees' knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at the highest level of professional expertise.
  • Establish measures to effectively monitor and assess performance of staff and resolve performance problems, including implementing progressive disciplinary action.
  • Write reports on work progress and section accomplishments and communicate status reports with clients and stakeholders.
  • Review the analysis of chemicals, pesticides, pesticide metabolites, prohibitive materials in food and other matrices to ensure data accuracy and defensibility.
  • Manage program's budget by monitoring and controlling revenues/expenditures while maintaining adequate instrumentation and supplies.
  • Act as consultant for technical field personnel regarding sampling issues and procedures.
  • Attend and give presentations on laboratory methodologies at various scientific and governmental meetings.
Requirements:
  • Sound personnel management and leadership skills, including the ability to manage teams and bring complex projects to completion.
  • Ability to develop positive and cooperative working relationships and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with managers, other governmental agencies, stakeholders, and professional organizations.
  • Education and experience in analytical chemistry and leading research projects.
Working Conditions:

The duties of this job are performed indoors approximately 100% of the time. Regular or recurring telework may occur as part of the incumbent's ongoing regular schedule in accordance with the Department's Telework Policy.

Special Requirements:
  • This position requires a completed Health Questionnaire and Physician's Report prior to appointment.
  • Statement of Qualifications is required to be submitted with your State Application (Std. 678).
