Job Title: Senior Environmental Scientist

Are you a seasoned environmental professional looking for a challenging opportunity to make a difference in vulnerable communities? The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is seeking a highly motivated Senior Environmental Scientist to join our team.

Job Summary:

The selected candidate will manage complex brownfield environmental investigation and cleanup projects, review environmental investigation work plans and reports, and effectively communicate complex scientific concepts to project proponents, consultants, and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage complex brownfield environmental investigation and cleanup projects under voluntary agreements
  • Review the validity of environmental investigation work plans and reports
  • Review the validity of environmental cleanup plans, pilot studies, risk assessments, and cleanup reports
  • Effectively communicate complex scientific concepts to project proponents, consultants, DTSC staff, public, and community members
  • Conduct data mining, data analysis, and data presentation
  • Mentor staff
  • Provide operational support

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Project management of complex environmental investigation and cleanup projects experience
  • Environmental investigation, evaluation, and/or characterization of contaminated properties experience
  • Environmental mitigation and/or cleanup of contaminated properties experience
  • Experience with written science communication, including preparation of investigation, cleanup, and/or Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment reports and work plans
  • Experience with verbal science communication, including public speaking
  • Data mining, data analysis, and data presentation experience

Working Conditions:

This position requires a hybrid telework schedule with two days per week in office and a flexible telework schedule. The selected candidate will be expected to conduct face-to-face meetings, participate in operation-focused in-person meetings, and attend outreach events as needed.
