Role Summary
The Principal Instrumentation Engineer is responsible for managing medium to large-scale and intricate projects. This role offers significant technical authority and full accountability for work responsibilities, along with limited administrative duties over a team of Instrumentation Engineers and Designers. The individual may delegate and assess the work of junior personnel and may also take on the role of Lead Instrumentation Engineer, overseeing all technical and scheduling aspects related to the assigned project. Work is periodically evaluated by the Chief Instrumentation Engineer to ensure objectives are met.
Key Responsibilities
- Drafts or evaluates discipline job specifications
- Creates or assesses requisitions for the inquiry and procurement of equipment, materials, and subcontracting services
- Validates technical bid assessments for equipment, materials, and subcontracting services in collaboration with the Procurement Department
- Formulates and reviews operational philosophies and Cause & Effect diagrams
- Analyzes and contributes to Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)
- Develops Network Architecture, Instrument Index, I/O List, and layouts as necessary for the discipline
- Oversees and observes factory acceptance testing of equipment
- Examines plot plans and facilities for Instrumentation & Control specifications
- Facilitates coordination and communication with client personnel regarding Instrumentation & Control activities
- Reviews and endorses vendor documentation
- Prepares or assesses engineering and design status reports, logs, work plans, and project discrepancies
- Ensures the discipline scope of work aligns with project specifications and/or proposal documents as applicable
- Accepts both short-term and long-term assignments to various locations as requested by the Chief Instrumentation Engineer
Qualifications
- Typically 8+ years of demonstrated experience in the oil and gas sector, particularly with pipeline facilities
- Familiarity with natural gas industry standards and codes from organizations such as NEMA, NFPA, API, AGA, ISA, IEC, ANSI, etc., with the ability to apply these standards to measurement, process control, and control system designs
- Proficient in computer systems within an engineering context
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
Education
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering
- Professional Engineering License is preferred
