Job Summary

This position plays a critical role in supporting the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments' (COG) environmental planning and policy initiatives. The Environmental Planner I will work closely with senior staff to develop and implement programs and projects that promote environmental sustainability and resilience in the region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development of agendas, meeting preparations, staff updates, presentation development, and meeting notes for the Chesapeake Bay and Water Resources Policy Committee (CBPC).
  • Coordinate with elected officials, track initiatives in the Chesapeake Bay, track legislative and regulatory changes, and write advocacy documents for the CBPC.
  • Support COG's Regional Stormwater Assistance Efforts by tracking state regulatory developments, new permitting requirements, and coordinating with other local government groups developing stormwater policies.
  • Assist with developing agendas, meeting notes, webinars, and workshops for the Water Resources Technical Committee (WRTC).
  • Coordinate COG's Water Quality Monitoring Analysis Efforts by tracking and interpreting regional water quality monitoring data for members and carrying out COG's new regional monitoring program focused on freshwater salinization syndrome.
  • Support COG's Chesapeake Bay Program Tracking and Coordination Efforts by tracking Bay Program initiatives and analyzing the various parts of the Bay Program's modeling framework.
Requirements
  • BA/BS or Master's degree in water resources management/policy, hydrology, biology, aquatic ecology, natural science, or related field.
  • One to three years of relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent research, writing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, particularly Teams, SharePoint, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and effectively summarize technical material for non-technical audiences.
Work Environment

The work environment is typically performed in an office setting, but the employee may occasionally be exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

The candidate will be required to report to work at the COG offices in Washington, D.C. This is not a fully remote work position. COG is currently conducting a pilot telework program that allows staff to telework up to two days a week; it is subject to change.
