Join our dedicated team of Culinary Specialists at the MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility
The State of Oregon is actively seeking individuals for a variety of Culinary Specialist roles at the MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility in Woodburn, Oregon. These roles include Permanent Part-time and Full-time positions, as well as Limited Duration and Temporary assignments. In this capacity, you will be tasked with the preparation and serving of nutritious, appealing meals in compliance with state and federal standards. Furthermore, this role includes the training and supervision of youth participating in vocational food service programs.
A Day in the Life of a Culinary Specialist:
- Ensures the safe and secure transportation of residents. Utilizes a duress system and radio while supervising youth, maintaining awareness of their whereabouts at all times.
- Manages the behavior of youth assigned to the kitchen or nearby areas.
- Provides visual supervision of youth in the kitchen, ensuring proper conduct and behavior. Acts as a liaison to foster positive communication between youth, kitchen staff, and administration, relaying essential information to security personnel and program managers.
- Operates independently using standardized recipes to prepare and coordinate nutritious, visually appealing meals daily.
- Adapts menus and recipes to meet the needs of the population, ensuring compliance with federal USDA guidelines while documenting any changes.
- Prepares special dietary meals for medical, dental, and religious requirements.
- Conducts daily cooking tasks, providing guidance and preparing food using various equipment such as washing, chopping, slicing, and dicing.
- Coordinates the timely service and delivery of meals, adhering to schedules.
- Maintains health and sanitation standards in food preparation, ensuring cleanliness of food, utensils, and kitchen equipment.

- Multiple Positions: This recruitment will create a list of qualified candidates for current and future vacancies - permanent, full-time, part-time, and temporary roles.
- Salary offers will be equitable and based on experience, skills, and education.
- Annual salary increases are provided on the anniversary date until the maximum salary range is reached.

Working Conditions:
- Facilities are tobacco-free environments.
- Shift work is required in a 24-hour, 7-day operation, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Adherence to the specific dress code is mandatory.
- Exposure to verbal abuse and dealing with impulsive youth may occur.
- Physical standards for vision, hearing, and dexterity are required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- One year of experience as a cook in a food service facility or possession of a Certificate of Completion in culinary arts from a certified institution.
Special Qualifications: A food handler's card is required, with the ability to obtain the appropriate county card within 30 days of hire.
Desired Attributes: Knowledge of food preparation principles and experience in a volume dining setting are preferred.
