Role Summary
The Income Support Specialist operates under the guidance of the Director of Career Pathways and Income Supports Program. This role is pivotal in providing education, navigation, and case management services to assist low-income, limited English-speaking immigrant community members in accessing a broad spectrum of public benefits and related services. The specialist will evaluate each individual or family to determine their eligibility for public aid benefits and other social services. They will connect participants with relevant agencies, educational institutions, and community-based organizations to ensure they receive the necessary support to address their immediate needs. Follow-up services will be provided to ensure that benefits applied for are received, acting as a liaison with various agencies to resolve individual cases.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct intake assessments with community members seeking assistance.
- Provide navigation support to eligible immigrants and refugees.
- Perform comprehensive screenings to ascertain eligibility for public benefits, emergency cash assistance, utility services, and rental assistance.
- Assist applicants in completing applications for various public benefits, including Medicaid, All Kids, SNAP, and other relevant services.
- Inform participants about available benefits from public and private sources tailored to their specific situations.
- Offer interpretation services and translate essential documents between English and Spanish.
- Maintain communication with clients regarding missing documentation necessary for application submissions.
- Act as a liaison and advocate for participants with relevant agencies, ensuring cases receive the necessary attention.
- Assist clients with issues related to financial aid, housing, education, and childcare.
- Facilitate referrals to other critical support services within the community.
- Keep track of each client's application status and maintain detailed case notes.
- Document services provided and outcomes in data tracking systems accurately and promptly.
- Prepare and submit accurate reports to funders on a monthly and quarterly basis.
- Organize program participant files to ensure compliance with funder policies.
- Develop and maintain relationships with local benefit agencies and other resource organizations.
- Stay updated on changes in benefits eligibility guidelines impacting community members.
- Participate in meetings with funders and stakeholders as required.
- Engage in team development and organizational activities.
- Ensure confidentiality of community members' information at all times.
- Maintain an organized database of program participants.
- Conduct orientation sessions for the Career Pathways program as needed.
- Participate in community outreach and maintain a flexible schedule for events and meetings.
- Travel between various sites to fulfill job responsibilities.
- Work with diverse individuals to help them access necessary resources.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the program supervisor.
Qualifications
- Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English is essential for effective communication.
- An associate degree is preferred, or 2-3 years of experience in a related field.
- Ability to build trust and rapport with immigrant populations.
- Strong multitasking abilities and capacity to work under pressure.
- Dependable and flexible, with the ability to work weekends if necessary.
- Solution-oriented with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Basic computer skills required; familiarity with Microsoft and Google suites is preferred.
