The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago is seeking dedicated full-time Early Childhood Education Lead Instructors.

Compensation begins at $36,192-$42,000 annually, depending on qualifications, with a preference for DCFS Director Qualified candidates.

As an Early Childhood Education Lead Instructor, you will implement effective teaching strategies, manage classroom dynamics, and conduct assessments for children aged 3 to 5 years. Your role will involve providing age-appropriate learning experiences, supervising assigned children, and fostering a supportive and positive classroom atmosphere. You will ensure compliance with individual needs of children as mandated by DCFS, ExceleRate Illinois, NAEYC, and relevant federal, state, and local standards, as well as YMCA policies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Model and promote high-quality teaching practices that support kindergarten readiness.
  • Exhibit culturally and linguistically responsive practices that honor all children and families, ensuring they feel welcomed and integral to the program.
  • Maintain vigilance over children's needs, ensuring their physical health and safety at all times.
  • Foster effective communication and partnerships with parents and families, encouraging their involvement.
  • Adhere to DCFS and all quality standards for maintaining safe, high-quality programming.
  • Collaborate regularly with the classroom team, including families, volunteers, and staff.
  • Utilize various data sources, both formative and summative, to inform instruction and support child-centered learning and development.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development annually; implement continuous quality improvement (CQI); and identify diverse instructional resources and methods to meet children's varied needs and enhance the classroom experience.
  • Support recruitment, enrollment, attendance, and retention efforts while aligning with the YMCA's mission and operational needs.
  • Assist in developing plans for continuous growth and improved service quality for children and families.
  • Monitor staffing and make necessary adjustments to ensure compliance with child-to-staff ratios.
  • Respect the confidentiality of each child participating in the program.
  • Oversee the safety and cleanliness of program facilities and outdoor play areas.
  • Exhibit the highest ethical and professional standards (including adherence to the NAEYC Code of Ethics) when interacting with students, parents, staff, and other associated agencies.
  • Assist in recruitment, supervision, and coaching of staff with varying levels of education and experience to ensure program quality and positive outcomes for children and families.
  • Demonstrate the ability to organize and prioritize multiple competing tasks to maximize effectiveness.
Lesson Planning and Classroom Management:
  • Design lesson plans with clear goals, objectives, activities, and outcomes aligned with the Illinois Early Learning Standards.
  • Implement high-quality, developmentally appropriate instructional activities and curriculum approaches (such as Creative CurriculumTM) that facilitate active learning and promote the holistic development of each child, ensuring adherence to DCFS, YMCA, ExceleRate IllinoisTM, and NAEYC accreditation standards as applicable.
  • Research, plan, and execute appropriate studies/projects for in-depth exploration of topics over time.
  • Create and maintain an attractive, clean, safe, and engaging classroom environment that employs positive guidance techniques and encourages children's independence and choice of activities.
  • Utilize the physical environment and pedagogical documentation to enhance teaching and learning practices.
  • Employ observational and child data to plan engaging early learning experiences based on the emergent needs of each child.
  • Document observations and maintain child portfolios to assist in assessments.
Qualifications:
  • Must meet DCFS licensing and program-related accreditation/credentialing requirements; ECE Credential Level 1 or higher preferred.
  • OR 64 semester hours in any discipline with at least 21 hours of college credit in child development, early childhood education, or early childhood special education AND one of the following:
    • Gateways to Opportunity Level I Illinois Director Credential
    • OR 3 semester hours of college credit in administration, leadership, or management
    • OR 3 points of credential-approved training in administration, leadership, or management.
  • Three years of experience teaching or equivalent in a preschool setting is strongly preferred.
  • Must provide documentation of Gateways credentialing or apply within 90 days of employment.
  • Knowledge of designing and implementing the Creative Curriculum and other high-quality curriculum approaches is preferred.
  • Pre-employment medical screening and TB test as per program requirements.
  • Required to achieve or maintain: Food Handlers Training.
Child Abuse Prevention: Supports the YMCA's commitment to child abuse prevention by:
  • Reporting any items that may pose a health or safety risk to staff, members, or guests to your supervisor.
  • Following all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including monitoring and supervision of children.
  • Reporting any suspicious behavior and violations of policies and procedures to your supervisor.
  • Completing all required child abuse prevention training.
