POSITION TITLE: Group Exercise Instructor

SUPERVISOR: Program Director /or as assigned

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Non-Exempt

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

Under the guidance of the Group Fitness Coordinator, the Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for planning, preparing, and leading group fitness sessions in a secure, enjoyable, and supportive atmosphere that encourages member wellness and participation, in alignment with YMCA policies and standards. The classes may include various formats such as Yoga, Dance, High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), Strength Training, and more. All personnel are expected to collaborate effectively with colleagues to meet the YMCA's goals and objectives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (not an exhaustive list):

  1. Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for members and guests participating in Health & Wellness programs.
  2. Exhibit leadership skills and adaptability while engaging participants at the front of the class, ensuring each session is enjoyable and motivating.
  3. Depending on the class format, demonstrate the ability to move rhythmically to the music, incorporating effective cueing, tempo, choreography, and safe transitions between movements.
  4. Provide excellent service to members and participants by learning their names and being accessible before and after classes for inquiries; foster strong relationships.
  5. Attend all scheduled classes; if unable to attend, communicate with the direct supervisor to arrange for a substitute and provide necessary guidance.
  6. Constructively correct participants when unsafe or incorrect techniques are observed.
  7. Ensure the highest level of safety in all activities.
  8. Represent the YMCA positively and professionally by adhering to the dress code and treating all members, guests, and staff with courtesy.
  9. Respond to emergencies and report all incidents as required.
  10. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • All candidates will undergo a formal interview process, which may include a written and practical assessment to demonstrate their knowledge and skills as an Instructor.
  • Completion of all onboarding safety training.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals of diverse ages, races, religions, and backgrounds.
  • Current CPR/AED/First Aid/O2 Certification.

Preferred:

  • Minimum of six months of experience as a participant or instructor of group fitness classes.
  • Ability to teach a variety of class formats is highly desirable.
  • Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends.
  • Educational background in nutrition, physical education, public health, or related fields.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Certification as a Group Exercise Instructor or specific program certification (e.g., Les Mills Body Pump).
