POSITION TITLE: Group Exercise Instructor

SUPERVISOR: Program Director or designated authority

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Non-Exempt

ROLE SUMMARY:

Under the guidance of the Group Fitness Coordinator, the Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for planning, preparing, and leading group fitness sessions in a secure, enjoyable, and supportive atmosphere that fosters member wellness and participation, in alignment with YMCA policies and procedures. The classes may encompass various formats such as Yoga, Dance, High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), Strength Training, and more. All personnel are expected to collaborate effectively with colleagues to meet the YMCA's objectives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for participants during Health & Wellness programs.
  2. Exhibit leadership and adaptability at the front of the class, ensuring each session is engaging and motivating for participants.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to move rhythmically to music, effectively utilizing cueing, tempo, choreography, and safe transitions between movements.
  4. Provide excellent service to members by learning their names and being available for inquiries before and after classes, fostering strong relationships.
  5. Attend all scheduled classes; in case of absence, communicate with the supervisor to arrange for a substitute and provide necessary guidance.
  6. Correct participants constructively when unsafe or improper techniques are observed.
  7. Ensure the highest level of safety in all activities.
  8. Represent the YMCA positively and professionally by adhering to the dress code and treating all members, guests, and staff with respect.
  9. Respond to emergencies and document incidents as required.
  10. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Mandatory:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • All candidates will undergo a formal interview process, which may include written and practical assessments to demonstrate their knowledge and skills as an Instructor.
  • Completion of all onboarding safety training.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and relate to individuals of diverse ages, backgrounds, and communities.
  • Current certifications in CPR/AED/First Aid/O2.

Preferred:

  • Minimum of six months of experience in group fitness instruction or participation.
  • Ability to teach a variety of fitness class formats is highly desirable.
  • Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends.
  • Educational background in nutrition, physical education, public health, or related fields.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Certification as a Group Exercise Instructor or specific program certifications (e.g., Les Mills Body Pump).
