Position Overview:

We are in search of a seasoned and driven insurance expert to take on the role of Underwriting Manager within our fleet underwriting division. This individual will be responsible for underwriting the comprehensive range of insurance products offered by DMC Insurance, Inc. and will oversee a designated portfolio of transportation-related business. In addition, this role involves managing and guiding a team of Underwriters, Associate Underwriters, and Underwriting Assistants to ensure compliance with DMC's underwriting protocols.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess new and renewal transportation insurance accounts by utilizing submitted application materials, historical loss data, public and governmental resources, telematics data, online research, and other pertinent tools.
  • Collaborate closely with the Sales team to evaluate submissions from our exclusive network of independent brokers and clients.
  • Directly contribute to DMC's corporate objectives of profitable growth through the effective management of a transportation business portfolio, while also mentoring and overseeing direct reports to uphold DMC's underwriting standards.
  • Conduct book-level analyses and maintain active account management for the assigned portfolio, coordinating with various DMC functional areas such as Claims, Risk Engineering, Finance, and Sales.
  • Supervise Underwriters as direct reports, which includes:
    • Conducting monthly and annual performance evaluations
    • Providing regular mentorship and training
    • Auditing Underwriting Files and Account Management
    • Preparing regular reports for Senior Management regarding employee progress and assisting in the development of training plans
  • Stay informed about existing laws and regulations, emerging technologies, and competitor activities that may affect our clients, product offerings, or pricing strategies.
  • Manage special projects, product development initiatives, form/rate/rule filings, market research, or broker/customer engagement efforts.
  • Perform other underwriting or administrative/management tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's Degree is required, preferably in insurance/risk management, actuarial science, mathematics/statistics, business administration, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in insurance is required, with a strong preference for commercial fleet underwriting, particularly in Excess Liability for transportation risks.
  • Must adhere to departmental policies and procedures, including regulatory compliance related to rate, rule, and form filings, as well as internal audit controls and underwriting authority as designated by DMC's Executive Vice President of Underwriting.
  • Possess a customer service orientation, strong listening skills, and the ability to present findings effectively.
  • Familiarity with ISO rating methodologies and proprietary rating models is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, is essential.
  • Willingness to travel as needed (0-20% of time) to engage with key prospects, support executive initiatives, and participate in industry events, if required.
  • Must be a self-starter capable of managing time effectively in a fast-paced environment, prioritizing critical tasks, communicating status to management, and delivering on objectives promptly.
  • Ability to work proactively in independent settings, as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • A history of supervisory experience is strongly preferred.
