Position Overview

Arlington County's Police Department is in search of a skilled Criminal Intelligence Analyst to join the Crime Analysis Unit within the Homeland Security section. This unit plays a crucial role in delivering sophisticated evaluations of diverse crime data sourced from various channels to inform future crime deterrence strategies and resource distribution within the Department.

The selected individual will engage in advanced analytical and strategic reasoning to pinpoint trends and geographic areas that may require enhanced public safety measures. Responsibilities include providing technical assistance through GIS mapping and database software to extract crime statistics, criminal investigation reports, and geospatial data for comprehensive analysis, data compilation, and insightful reporting to guide the Police Department's strategic initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Extracting and analyzing crime data from the Law Enforcement Records Management System (LERMS);
  • Employing advanced statistical techniques and software for crime data analysis;
  • Supporting criminal investigations by organizing and interpreting complex data sets, including online activities and communication records;
  • Applying geocoding and GIS methodologies to crime data for geographical assessments and map creation;
  • Generating and distributing various reports that highlight criminal activities and patterns to different units within the Department and the public;
  • Formulating and presenting recommendations to command staff regarding future enforcement strategies or officer deployment based on analytical findings;
  • Preparing and delivering briefings to Departmental and County leadership on trends or emerging issues;
  • Staying informed on best practices and new trends to propose enhancements to the Crime Analysis Unit's systems or procedures.
The ideal candidate will possess strong verbal and written communication abilities, adeptness in managing multiple tasks and shifting priorities while working independently, and experience in engaging with senior personnel, community members, and public officials while maintaining confidentiality.

Selection Criteria

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Computer Science, Statistics, Research Analysis, or a related field with coursework in statistical analysis;
  • Significant experience in planning and research, including advanced statistical analysis and mapping;
  • Experience in providing technical support for GIS applications.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience with analytical software such as ESRI Arc GIS and Tyler Technologies' New World Law Enforcement Record Management System;
  • Experience in a criminal justice or law enforcement setting.
Special Requirements

A background check will be conducted on all finalists for the position, which may include checks of criminal records, driving records, education, professional licensure, and credit history. A favorable review of the applicant's driving record and criminal history may be required for employment offers. Candidates under consideration will undergo a pre-employment polygraph examination and a character/background investigation conducted by the Police Department.

Work Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday with core hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
