Position Summary:
Under the general oversight of the section Supervisor, the Clinical Laboratory Specialist is responsible for conducting laboratory tests that support the diagnosis and treatment of patients. This role encompasses both routine and specialized diagnostic testing, with the flexibility to work across various laboratory departments or focus on a specific area as required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain proficiency in performing diagnostic tests across multiple laboratory areas, including Blood Bank, Serology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Hematology, Chemistry, and Microbiology.
  • Execute diagnostic tests in accordance with established laboratory protocols and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with medical and office staff regarding specimen issues, order inquiries, and result communications, ensuring proper documentation.
  • Receive and process specimens from both inpatients and outpatients, evaluating their acceptability for testing.
  • Ensure test results align with the patient's laboratory information system (LIS) history and investigate any discrepancies.
  • Accurately enter results into the LIS and conduct timely reviews of manually entered data.
  • Communicate critical results to the appropriate personnel based on established lab policies.
  • Participate in proficiency surveys and maintain confidentiality of patient reports.
  • Prepare and calibrate laboratory equipment for various tests, ensuring proper maintenance and operation.
  • Document and retain all quality control data, performing regular maintenance checks on laboratory instruments.
  • Assist in training new personnel and students, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and procedures, utilizing personal protective equipment when handling biological materials.
  • Demonstrate respect for all patients, families, and colleagues, ensuring a professional and courteous atmosphere.

Qualifications:
Education:
For MLT: An Associate's degree in a chemical, biological, or physical science or medical technology with at least one year of laboratory training or experience.
For MT: A Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent, with a minimum of 36 semester hours in biology and physical sciences, along with up to one year of related work experience.

Experience:
Preferred candidates will have at least one year of hospital work experience and have completed an internship through an accredited MT or MLT program.

Certification:
MLT: MLT (ASCP); CLT (NCA), ASCP eligible, or equivalent.
MT: MT/MLS (ASCP), CLS (NCA) or equivalent certification preferred. Eligibility for ASCP certification is required.

Skills:
Functional experience with common laboratory analyzers and laboratory computer systems is essential. Candidates should be able to manage multiple priorities and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
