Job Summary:

The Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer is responsible for providing high-quality diagnostic fetal, pediatric, and adult echocardiograms to patients with congenital heart defects and children with acquired heart defects. This per diem position requires a commitment to delivering exceptional patient care and working collaboratively with the healthcare team to provide comprehensive echocardiographic examinations.

Responsibilities:

Conduct fetal, pediatric, and adult echocardiograms to diagnose and monitor congenital heart defects and acquired heart defects
Work independently and collaboratively with the healthcare team to provide comprehensive echocardiographic examinations
Escort patients and families from examination to the echocardiography room and back to the examination room at completion of study
Explain procedures to patients and families prior to the commencement of the test to ensure cooperation and optimum test results
Follow accredited laboratory protocols for obtaining echocardiograms utilizing two-dimensional images, m-Mode, color flow, and spectral Doppler where applicable
Acquire anatomical, pathological, and/or physiological data for interpretation by a physician
Maintain patient charts and records, and record/process sonographic data and other pertinent observations made during the procedure for presentation to the interpreting physician
Create preliminary echocardiography reports for physician review/signature
Review studies with physicians
Maintain proper operation of the ultrasound equipment (cleaning, storage, and preventative maintenance)
Recognize equipment malfunctions, ability to troubleshoot, and take appropriate corrective action
Maintain laundry for examination rooms and responsible for maintaining adequate inventory of ultrasound supplies
Follow and comply with universal precautions and OSHA standards
Follow and comply with safety and security training
Rotate as needed to cover Sonographer absences
Code appropriate for services performed
Assist nurse practitioner/physician with procedures as needed
Ability to work with infants, children, young adults, and families to ease anxiety surrounding the procedure

Qualifications:

Minimum six months experience as an ultrasound technician working in pediatric and/or adult echocardiography setting preferred
Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
Skilled in operating ultrasound equipment
Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
Fetal experience is preferred, or training will be provided
Participates in staff development, in-service workshops, and educational activities
Participates in professional development activities and meetings
Additional certification through the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)

Requirements:

Possess or be eligible for certification in adult and/or pediatric echocardiography through American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
Must adhere with the outlined certification maintenance requirements through ARDMS which includes but are not limited to, renewals, continuing medical education (CME) periods, and compliance policies
Satisfactory completion of one of the following; at least two (2) years in an accredited Allied Health Educational Program and one (1) year on-the-job-training in cardiac ultrasound, or completion of an approved cardiac ultrasound educational program
CPR certification required
New graduates of a cardiac ultrasound program who are employed in an accredited facility must obtain an appropriate credential within one year from the date of graduation
