The Matian Firm, APC is seeking a dedicated Legal Assistant to enhance our proficient legal team. This role is pivotal in upholding our esteemed reputation through meticulous legal research, document preparation, and effective database management. The Legal Assistant will directly report to the Department Supervisor and collaborate closely with the team to ensure the seamless progression of criminal cases.
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitate communication with clients, providing timely updates on case statuses.
- Efficiently manage the attorney's schedule, including meetings with clients and court appearances.
- Assist in the preparation of criminal cases for trial, which includes handling legal documents, data entry, and correspondence.
- Compile a daily court calendar, obtain jury panels, and issue discovery to defense attorneys.
- Prepare and manage subpoenas, ensuring timely cancellations when trials are concluded or postponed.
- Request and organize criminal history documentation from various sources.
- Coordinate appointments for defense attorneys with deputy prosecutors and for depositions and pretrial conferences.
- Support victims by providing information on restitution, no contact orders, subpoenas, and court dates.
- Engage with law enforcement at federal, state, and local levels, as well as with the general public and witnesses in criminal matters.
- Perform various office-related tasks to support departmental functions, including assisting co-workers and managing front desk responsibilities.
Qualifications:
- Experience in Criminal Defense is preferred but not mandatory.
- A professional background with transferable skills is essential.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is required.
- Prior experience in a paralegal role or related legal field is advantageous.
- Familiarity with Case Management Software or similar computer programs is a plus.
