Job Summary

The Child Specific Paraprofessional is a school-based position that focuses on the development and academic success of students. This role assists in the implementation of instructional programs and works alongside a teacher to provide support and assistance in the classroom. A child specific paraprofessional will provide one-on-one support and assistance to a specific child in accordance with the child's Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate positive social interactions between the child and other children in the classroom;
  • Assist and escort the student to and from each destination and attend to the student's personal hygiene and care needs;
  • Serve as a liaison between teachers and parents and communicate progress;
  • Monitor student behavior and maintain documentation of care provided to the child;
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Assist the teacher in implementing lesson plans and instructional materials;
  • Work with small groups or individual students to reinforce learning concepts introduced by the teacher;
  • Provide additional support to students with diverse learning needs;
  • Monitor and manage student behavior in classrooms, hallways, and other school settings;
  • Assist with student transitions between activities and locations;
  • Develop critical skills that will ultimately lead to greater independence;
  • Ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all students;
  • Assist teacher in administering, scoring, and recording achievement and diagnostic tests;
  • Implement program under direction of teachers; operate audio-visual equipment; use variety of learning materials;
  • Serve as a liaison between teachers and parents and communicate progress;
  • Assist teacher with required clerical/record-keeping duties;
  • Assist in the setup and arranging of the classroom room, materials, and bulletin boards;
  • Operate and care for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes;
  • Assist in preparation of instructional materials;
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge;
  • Perform other duties as required.
Educational Requirements

  • You must meet at least one of the following qualifications:
  • 1. Pass the Educational Testing Service (ETS) para-pro assessment to be classified as a highly qualified paraprofessional.
  • 2. Two Years of Full-Time Study (48 Semester Credit Hours).
  • 3. Obtain an Associate's degree or higher.
Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

  • Previous experience as a Paraprofessional preferred.
  • Educational experience preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents and staff.
Salary and Benefits

The salary for this position is $28,500 - $37,800 per year. Salaries are determined by educational background and/or relevant years of experience.

The work environment for this position is a school setting. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Performance Evaluation

The employee will be evaluated based on the above position using either two methods: via COMPASS or a NOLA-PS evaluating instrument. If the employee holds an Educational Leadership certification, he/she will be evaluated via COMPASS to ensure renewal of certification.
