CEA Union: Starting Rate of Pay - $16.48 plus $6.00 shift differential = $22.48/hr.

Position Summary: The Behavior Support Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting special education and building personnel in addressing the diverse needs of students with intricate instructional, communication, social-emotional, and behavioral challenges. The primary objective is to support and enhance the educational experience of students with complex requirements in both instructional and non-instructional settings. To succeed in this role, an individual must effectively fulfill each essential duty. The qualifications outlined below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities required.

Job Requirements:
  • Current State of Illinois Paraprofessional (Aide) Approval, Educator License with Stipulations, Professional Educator License, or Substitute License.
  • Completion of State of Illinois Registered Behavior Technician Coursework or Certification.
  • Assigned to a high needs classroom/program.
  • Participation in the District BCBA cohort (1 meeting per month).
  • Ability to work effectively with children, particularly those with complex needs.
  • Capability to function within the school environment framework.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others, including providing professional development, coaching, and mentorship.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • General principles, methods, equipment, and techniques of behavior intervention services, including behavior management and positive reinforcement.
    • Strengths, needs, and supports of students with special needs, along with an understanding of eligibility and diagnosis.
    • Child growth and development.
    • General knowledge of special education processes, procedures, policies, and mandates.
    • Operation of therapeutic and adaptive equipment.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills.
    • Record keeping, data collection, data analysis, and report writing.
    • Health and safety regulations.
    • Maintaining positive, professional, and collaborative communication and interactions with staff, students, and the community.
    • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Google, and basic computer programs.
    • Child guidance principles, practices, classroom procedures, and appropriate conduct.
Typical Duties:
  • Provide behavior intervention services to enhance and improve the skills and functional abilities of students under the guidance of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).
  • Monitor progress, reassess skill development, and determine appropriate support and actions with clearly defined guidelines.
  • Develop and implement suitable treatment plans under the direction of BCBA/Teacher/Therapist in accordance with the student's identified needs, IEP, or Section 504 plan.
  • Set up, operate, adjust, and demonstrate therapeutic and adaptive equipment.
  • Prepare, enter, and maintain various student records, reports, and individual case notes.
Under the direction of BCBA/Teacher/Therapist:
  • Collaborate with BCBAs, Teachers, or Therapists to gather assessment data.
  • Work with BCBA, Teachers, or Therapists to create a skill acquisition plan for the student and implement procedures to support the student's acquisition of the desired skill.
  • Assist in creating a behavior reduction plan and implement interventions and differential reinforcement procedures.
  • Monitor progress and support sensory-motor development and other identified developmental needs using various tools; evaluate needs and progress toward goals; monitor and adjust individual programs as necessary.
  • Contribute to the evaluation process under the direction of the Board Certified Behavior Analyst.
  • Communicate with staff, teachers, parents, and administrators to integrate new and improved student skills into daily activities, extend therapeutic activities to the classroom and home, exchange information, and resolve issues or concerns related to the student's IEP.
  • Perform additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Special Services Department Administrator or designee, in accordance with Board of Education policies and procedures.
  • Work with students individually or in small groups in academic studies, basic life skills, and other assigned instruction, reinforcing information/instructions following a lesson.
  • Assist individual or groups of students during activities including recess, lunch, and ensuring safe boarding and disembarking from transportation.
  • Support hygiene and toileting activities, which may include transferring and lifting students. Sanitize classroom and equipment using approved materials.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
Physical Ability: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and run. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 lbs, such as lifting a child from the floor. The employee must be able to push/pull items up to 80 lbs, such as children in wheelchairs.

Work Environment: Hazards include potential exposure to communicable diseases and contact with blood and other body fluids; potential exposure to physical injury from aggressive behavior.
