Position Summary:
The Community Support Specialist (CSS) reports directly to the Group Home Manager and is responsible for maintaining effective communication with this individual. The CSS plays a crucial role in delivering care and assistance to adults with developmental disabilities within a group home environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver direct care and support to clients, assisting them in engaging with and completing daily living activities.
- Support clients in all aspects of self-care, including feeding, toileting, grooming, dressing, and laundry.
- Prepare nutritious meals for residents, encouraging their active participation.
- Supervise residents during meal times to ensure safety and support.
- Administer prescribed medications in accordance with established policies and maintain precise documentation.
- Alert the Residence Supervisor when medication supplies fall below a 7-day threshold.
- Keep accurate records, including program plans, case notes, incident reports, and daily goal sheets, submitting them monthly to the Residence Supervisor.
- Manage resident and household finances responsibly.
- Provide training and support in physical, behavioral, and functional skills across various settings, including residential and community environments.
- Facilitate social integration by identifying and utilizing community resources.
- Assist residents in selecting suitable leisure and recreational activities.
- Organize and lead outings for residents.
- Transport residents to community activities, medical appointments, and other necessary functions, maintaining a mileage log. A valid Florida Driver's License and a clean driving record are required.
- Ensure constant supervision and awareness of residents' whereabouts.
- Exhibit conduct that aligns with agency policies and standards.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding all participant information.
- Respect the rights and dignity of all program participants.
- Provide necessary information for client-related meetings.
- Ensure compliance with house rules.
- Assist residents in developing housekeeping skills as per the assigned chore list.
- Support the upkeep of the facility, particularly in cleaning and laundry tasks.
- Report maintenance needs to the Residence Supervisor or Director of Residential Programs.
- Maintain a communication log for long-distance calls.
- Foster open communication with the Residence Supervisor, colleagues, families, and support coordinators.
- Document community activities, house issues, and any relevant resident communications in a logbook.
- Follow emergency procedures as outlined in The Arc's Emergency Procedure booklet.
- Provide basic first aid and CPR as needed and secure emergency medical services when necessary.
- Participate in investigations related to agency matters or staff members.
- Arrive punctually according to the assigned schedule.
- Maintain a professional appearance appropriate for daily activities.
- Attend all required training sessions as directed by the Residence Supervisor or Director of Residential Programs.
- Complete all mandatory training within the specified timeframe.
- Meet the physical demands of the position as related to job responsibilities.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Director of Residential.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- A minimum of one year of experience in a medical, psychiatric, nursing, or childcare setting, or working with individuals with developmental disabilities is required.
- College or vocational training equivalent to 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or 750 classroom hours may substitute for required experience.
- A current Florida Driver's License and compliance with state auto insurance requirements are mandatory.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
- Must be able to remain stationary for 50% of the time.
- Occasional movement within the office to access files and equipment is necessary.
- Regular operation of office equipment such as computers and printers is required.
- Occasional outdoor work may be necessary, requiring mobility and the ability to ascend and descend.
- Effective communication skills are essential for exchanging information accurately.
- Ability to observe and recognize details at various distances is required.
- Frequent lifting of boxes weighing up to 20 pounds may be necessary.
