Job Summary

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a key member of our cardiology team, providing direct patient care services and performing medical acts as an NP or PA under the supervision of the supervisory physician. This role involves working with cardiology patients in various settings, including inpatient units, emergency departments, and cath labs. The APP will evaluate new patients, diagnose and treat common conditions, and coordinate patient care and discharge.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate new patients and diagnose and treat common conditions in the cardiovascular patient population.
  • Perform an appropriate history and physical exam on all assigned patients, write progress notes, and prepare patient workups and summaries.
  • Facilitate and order diagnostic studies, including echocardiograms, cardiolite stress tests, and cardiac catheterization, as indicated.
  • Work closely with inpatient rounding teams to allocate workload based on daily census and clinical needs.
  • Assist in the training of new employees, students, and fellow trainees, and actively participate in educational conferences.
  • Discharge all assigned admitted/procedural/surgical patients, including dictating discharge summaries, patient education, and prescriptions.
  • Collaborate with attending physicians and hospitalists to formulate treatment plans and monitor patient progress.
Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree Physician Assistant program (PA) or an accredited MSN or DNP Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program for adult care (NP).
  • Unrestricted medical license issued by NCMB to practice as a PA or unrestricted RN licensure issued by or recognized by the NCBON with approval to practice as an NP.
  • Federal and State DEA with full prescriptive authority.
  • PA-C certification (PA) or ACNP or AGACNP certification (NP).
  • At least one year of provider experience in a cardiology setting, or relevant nursing experience or clinical rotations.
Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Able to clearly articulate scope of practice and practice within those guidelines as a Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant in the state of North Carolina and within the Duke University Health System.
  • Able to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively to solve complex problems.
  • Able to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare teams, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others.
  • Able to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, perform health assessments, treatment, and follow-up.
