Job Summary:

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts seeks a highly motivated Environmental Intern to support the Environmental Services Section in reviewing MassDOT projects statewide to ensure compliance with state and federal environmental regulations.

About the Role:

This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain a broad range of knowledge in environmental regulations, including the Clean Water Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Wetlands Protection Act, and various regulations associated with hazardous materials, historic and archeological resources, and conservation land/open space.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review project construction plans and analyze project areas using ArcGIS
  • Evaluate projects against environmental regulations and review permit applications
  • Perform occasional field work for site visits, wetland delineations, and rare species monitoring
  • Support the Stormwater Unit in implementing the statewide Stormwater Program
  • Assist with collecting drainage infrastructure asset data, reviewing stormwater retrofit design plans, and developing an inspection and maintenance protocol for stormwater treatment facilities

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, such as environmental science or policy
  • Coursework or familiarity in hydrology and hydraulics, environmental policy, wetland science, hazardous materials, or conservation biology
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ArcGIS
  • Excellent organizational abilities and strong communication skills
  • Ability to operate effectively and professionally under pressure
