Role Summary

The Nursing Assistant (NA) acts as a caregiver for residents during assigned shifts in long-term care settings. This role involves delivering resident-centered nursing care and assisting with daily living activities under the guidance of a registered nurse (RN). The NA is expected to understand and provide age-appropriate care tailored to the physical and emotional needs of residents as outlined in their care plans.

As a vital member of the nursing team, the NA is responsible for adhering to infection prevention protocols and utilizing Personal Protective Equipment effectively. Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting residents with essential health care needs, including bathing, grooming, dressing, and toileting.
  • Recording vital signs and providing psychosocial support.
  • Facilitating resident mobility through safe transfer techniques and exercises.
  • Contributing to meal preparation and ensuring a pleasant dining experience.
  • Documenting resident interactions and communicating any changes in condition to the charge nurse.
  • Collecting non-invasive specimens and assisting with wellness programs.

Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred but not mandatory. Candidates must be at least 16 years old, with prior experience in clinical or nursing assistant roles in long-term care being advantageous.

Annual competency testing and continuing education credits are required, with a minimum of 12 hours of education each year. Certification with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry is necessary where applicable.
