Water Treatment Plant Operator Assistant

About the Role
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Water Treatment Plant Operator Assistant to join our team at American Water. As an entry-level role, you will be responsible for supporting our water treatment operations and assisting in maintaining the quality of our drinking water.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in performing checks on the condition of the water plant at the beginning of each shift by reviewing logs and notes.
- Support analysis on all stages of the water treatment processes to ensure water quality.
- Making adjustments necessary to maintain water quality, pressures, and adequate quantities of water as directed.
- Calibrate instruments and equipment, perform routine laboratory tests, and document results.
- Backwash filters to ensure proper filtration by removing trapped particulates.
- Observe and assist in performing preventive and emergency maintenance on equipment.
- Perform various other routine duties, including building/grounds maintenance, janitorial work, and preventative maintenance.
- Record data and activities during work shifts on shift log sheets, logbooks, and computers.
- Operate motors, pumps, valves, generators, and specialized equipment and machinery.
- Collect samples from designated points, perform physical and chemical tests, and record results.
- Clean out settling basins, hydrotreaters, filters, and washwater holding tanks as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or associate's degree in a related field (e.g., environmental science, chemistry, biology).
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 0-2 years of experience in the water industry preferred.
- Treatment Plant Operator Trainee certification required within Company and State mandated guidelines.
- Valid Driver's License with ability to pass a motor vehicle check.

Salary and Benefits
The estimated annual salary for this position is $60,000 - $70,000, depending on qualifications and experience. In addition to a competitive salary, American Water offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement savings plan, paid time off, and opportunities for professional development and growth.
