Job Summary:

The Radiology Technologist Extern is responsible for assisting in the performance of radiographic procedures, maintaining patient safety, and adhering to hospital policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Requisitions:
    • Obtain and examine requisitions for every exam to ensure awareness of additional information, such as procedure requested, patient condition, and special notes or comments.
    • Question patients before procedures to obtain pertinent history and document it on the requisition.
    • Screen and document possible pregnancy on all female patients of child-bearing age.
    • Document history, pregnancy, and time with initials.
  • Patient/Customer Contact:
    • Attempt to understand patient needs and respond accordingly.
    • Introduce self and explain procedures to every patient, reassuring and consistently attempting to obtain patient cooperation while reducing anxiety.
  • Performance of Procedure and Radiation Safety:
    • Select proper film and place proper markers on cassettes.
    • Use lead gonadal shields or provide protective apparel to protect unaffected body parts; use collimation.
    • Position x-ray equipment at proper distance and angle from patient's body to present a clear, well-defined view.
    • Demonstrate competence in required positioning of anatomy and ability to adapt to varying patient conditions.
    • Review patient condition and determine proper exposure factor for each radiograph.
  • Teamwork and Safety:
    • Demonstrate willingness and ability to assist others as requested.
    • Assist in other areas, such as medical assistants, front desk, etc., using time to department advantage.
    • Readily volunteer for additional work.
    • Maintain annual CPR certification to ensure patient safety.
    • Operate equipment in a safe manner, according to hospital and department policies and procedures on safety.
    • Use Universal Precautions to protect self from bodily fluid exposure.
    • Ensure IDNS and ARRT licensure remains current.

Education/Experience Required:

Graduate of approved radiology technology school.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

General knowledge of x-ray equipment, including portables; IDNS registry eligible; CPR certified.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Able to adjust to flexible hours; able to lift, push, pull 50 lbs. with assistance; ability to communicate effectively.

This position can recognize needs and behaviors of all age groups, demonstrating evidence by recognizing levels of development and modifying approach and exhibiting communication skills necessary to interpret age-specific responses.

Addendum:

Report patient safety events and near misses in a timely fashion; adhere to all behavioral and procedural patient safety practices; promote a culture of safety through identifying threats to patient safety and intervening to prevent patient harm; communicate openly and promote teamwork; report intimidating behavior and other threats to patient safety promptly.
