The Dallas Morning News is in search of a dynamic and resourceful editor to elevate our business journalism in one of the most rapidly expanding areas in the nation.

With Texas' population surpassing 30 million and projections indicating growth to nearly 40 million by 2036, the implications of this surge affect every aspect of life for residents and newcomers alike. This growth presents significant challenges regarding access, equity, and resources.

For business reporters, there is no better location than the Dallas-Fort Worth area, which hosts numerous Fortune 500 companies, nearly 80 publicly traded firms with revenues exceeding $1 billion, major airports, leading airlines, and a multitude of businesses across various sectors.

We are seeking an editor capable of guiding a talented team of business journalists to analyze and report on these pressing issues through insightful, impactful, and innovative storytelling that sheds light on the challenges facing our region.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong aptitude for working with data and records, a comprehensive understanding of social media and digital metrics, and a commitment to expanding our online readership. The ability to manage a team effectively to deliver a mix of in-depth and daily news coverage is essential.

This role will oversee one of the largest regional business news teams in the country, supported by an assistant editor and managing a team of 10 reporters focused on real estate, retail, transportation, airlines, diverse communities, health, and breaking business news.

The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional news judgment, robust leadership and organizational skills, and the capacity to navigate change. Additionally, this leader should be dedicated to the growth and development of all News staff members and committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategize for both immediate coverage and long-term projects with a focus on distinctive journalism that sets our reporting apart from competitors.
  • Generate innovative content ideas that emphasize diverse voices, stories, subjects, and perspectives.
  • Monitor and analyze analytics related to coverage areas and the newsroom, effectively communicating goals, successes, and areas for improvement.
  • Ensure stories are reported with fairness, accuracy, and thoroughness, featuring compelling writing.
  • Foster trusting relationships with team members.
  • Collaborate across departments to maximize editorial and revenue opportunities related to business content.
  • Engage actively in breaking news across digital platforms and be willing to create content as necessary.
  • Exhibit strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask under tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrate keen news judgment with the ability to identify stories that will resonate with our audience.
  • Participate as a leader in newsroom projects and special digital initiatives, including video and audio efforts as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in editorial roles.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in journalism or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong news judgment and a solid understanding of journalistic standards.
  • Proven ability to lead a team effectively.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong time-management and organizational abilities.
  • Clear understanding of digital, audio, and print production requirements.
  • Familiarity with audience analytics for both digital and print platforms.
  • Proficiency in publishing and planning tools (e.g., Airtable, Arc, CuePrint) and communication platforms (e.g., Gmail, Slack).
  • Ability to evaluate staff content, work efficiently under deadline pressure, communicate clearly, follow instructions, adapt quickly to technological changes, and lead a team.
