Position Overview

The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) plays a crucial role in overseeing caregiver staff during their shifts, ensuring high-quality care for residents while adhering to the residence's philosophy. The CMA is responsible for the accurate administration of medications to residents, in compliance with state regulations and Oaks Senior Living policies. This position also involves providing personalized care, responding to emergencies, and safeguarding residents' rights to safe and confidential treatment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of one year of experience in a Senior Living environment.
  • Preferred supervisory experience in healthcare or service industries.
  • Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant is required.
  • Georgia Certified Medication Aide Certificate is mandatory.
  • Must maintain good standing with the Georgia CNA/CMA Registry.
  • Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Must possess a friendly and caring demeanor, with a genuine desire to work with older adults.
  • Minimum age of 21 years, with a satisfactory criminal history check.
  • Physical examination by a licensed physician and a negative drug screening are required.
  • Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations.

Key Responsibilities

Resident Care Services

  • Execute all assigned duties effectively as directed by the Wellness Director and/or Executive Director. Supervise caregiver staff to ensure quality care and meet residents' needs according to Oaks Senior Living policies.
  • Follow each resident's Negotiated Service Plan and promptly inform the Wellness Director or Executive Director of any changes in resident conditions.
  • Respond immediately to resident calls for assistance.
  • Seek guidance from the Executive Director or Wellness Director if uncertain about medication administration or treatments.
  • Assist with meal service and oversee caregiver staff in the dining area, ensuring cleanliness post-meal.
  • Prevent infection spread by adhering to standard precautions and disposing of waste according to policies.
  • Foster positive relationships with residents and their families.
  • Handle resident emergencies according to established procedures.
  • Help develop and maintain caregiver staff schedules that meet resident needs and ensure adequate staffing.
  • Address on-the-job injuries in line with Oaks Senior Living policies.
  • Complete required continuing education units (CEUs) biennially and annually as specified by the Alliant GMCF Registry.
  • Lead by example, promote teamwork, and embody the Oaks Senior Living philosophy.
  • Maintain an open-door policy for employees to discuss concerns or grievances.
  • Keep CPR & First Aid certifications current.

Medication Management

  • Adhere to the six 'rights' of medication administration (right resident, right drug, right dosage, right time, right route, right documentation) consistently. Verify these rights three times: when retrieving the medication, before administration, and after administration.
  • Administer medications according to the Medication Observation Record (MOR) while safeguarding resident privacy. Document all medication-related actions accurately as per Oaks Senior Living policy.
  • Respect residents' rights to refuse medication and ensure their safety during administration. Provide clear explanations about medications being given.
  • Monitor residents for adverse reactions to medications and report any issues to the Wellness Director or Executive Director immediately. Report all medication errors honestly and promptly.

Communication

  • Participate in all staff meetings and mandatory training sessions.
  • Effectively communicate residents' needs to caregiver staff during shift changes, and report any changes in resident conditions or concerns to the Wellness Director or Executive Director.
  • Ensure all necessary paperwork for resident care is completed and current.

Physical Job Requirements

To meet job demands, employees must be capable of performing essential physical tasks for extended periods. Employees should follow proper body mechanics and safety protocols when assisting or transferring residents. Typical physical requirements include:
  • Standing/walking for up to eight hours daily; sitting for up to two hours.
  • Frequently supporting up to 70 pounds and occasionally lifting/carrying up to 15 pounds.
  • Regularly kneeling, bending, and reaching, with assistance for resident transfers as needed.
