Job Summary

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to join the Salt Lake City Public Utilities Department as a Water Distribution System Operator II. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining the city's water distribution system, ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of water to our residents and businesses.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and Maintain Water Distribution System: Operate pumps, wells, and computer telemetry systems to monitor and control the water distribution system. Make adjustments as needed to sustain pressure and reservoir levels, and meet emergency demands and flow requirements in various distribution zones.
  • Respond to Emergencies: Respond to emergency and routine water-related situations, including main breaks, service line breaks, fire line breaks, and hydrant breaks. Identify problems and take corrective action, and may use specialized equipment to locate mains, services, and valves.
  • Conduct Pressure Surveys and Maintenance: Conduct pressure surveys, test fire and hydrant flows, collect pressure recorder data, and complete and turn in various records and reports. Inspect and repair pump controls and regulator valves, and clean reservoirs, tanks, pump stations, well stations, conduits, aqueducts, and other water distribution equipment.
  • Operate and Maintain Chlorine Tanks: Operate and change chlorine tanks and associated equipment, and implement emergency procedures when handling chlorine leaks.
  • Provide Technical Advice and Support: May act as a distribution operator lead person and provide technical advice to maintenance crews and other staff members. Provide back-up services to dispatch as needed, and may provide technical advice to others while off-duty.
Requirements
  • Education: High school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Experience: Three years' experience in water system operation or maintenance, or six months full-time work experience as a Water Distribution System Operator I for Salt Lake City's Public Utilities Department.
  • Certification: Possession of valid Utah Water Distribution Operator Grade I certification within 12 months from hire date as Water Distribution System Operator II.
  • Skills: Ability to assess situations, establish priorities, make appropriate decisions, and respond quickly in an emergency, under adverse conditions. Ability to analyze pressure data recording charts and read and understand technical instruction, and to file, maintain, and retrieve manual and computer records and reports.
  • Other: Possession of a valid driver's license or driving privilege card.
Working Conditions

This position requires moderately heavy physical activity, including pushing, pulling, or lifting medium-heavy weights, and working in difficult positions. There may be exposure to heights and toxic chemicals, as well as disagreeable elements such as cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dust, and grease. Employees are subject to shift work and call-back in emergency situations.
