Job Title: Analyst, Baseball Analytics

Department Overview:

Baseball Analytics plays a critical role in supporting the decision-making processes across Baseball Operations, encompassing Player Acquisition, Player Development, and Player Optimization. Our team is responsible for developing predictive models, conducting long-term research, creating reports, and effectively communicating our findings to stakeholders.

Position Overview:

The Boston Red Sox and Fenway Sports Management seek a skilled Analyst to join our Baseball Analytics department. This individual will be responsible for designing, evaluating, and optimizing predictive models that enhance decision-making across all aspects of Baseball Operations.

This role offers a unique opportunity to apply advanced statistical techniques and data science to drive strategic initiatives and shape the team's future direction. The successful candidate will possess strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of baseball, and the ability to communicate complex concepts to non-technical audiences effectively.

Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and maintain robust predictive models and data pipelines to generate insights for player evaluation, acquisition, development, and performance optimization.
  2. Craft compelling written reports and data visualizations to effectively communicate complex analyses to diverse audiences, including both technical specialists and Baseball Operations leadership.
  3. Partner with the Baseball Systems team to seamlessly integrate new analytical findings into team applications and proactively identify and address data quality issues.
  4. Continuously monitor and evaluate cutting-edge analytics and research from public and academic spaces to recommend innovative ideas, methodologies, and technologies that can enhance on-field performance.

Competencies:

The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of modern statistical and machine learning methods, as well as advanced proficiency with popular data science languages and libraries. They will also be able to approach research questions to drive actionable insights and effectively communicate complex analyses to diverse audiences.

Additional Qualifications:

The successful candidate will hold a PhD or master's degree in a quantitative field or equivalent professional experience. They will also possess proficiency in SQL and programming languages such as R or Python, as well as a passion for baseball and a strong desire to contribute to building a championship-winning team.
