Position Overview:
The Senior Electrical Engineer will be accountable for providing technical guidance throughout the scoping, planning, design, and execution phases of on-site capital projects, ensuring successful navigation from inception to completion. This role will serve as the primary liaison for external engineering firms, equipment suppliers, and construction contractors regarding all electrical inquiries and challenges that may arise during capital projects. The Senior Electrical Engineer will deliver technically sound electrical engineering support for significant capital projects encompassing production, maintenance, growth, regulatory, and environmental considerations.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and participate in the electrical engineering aspects of capital projects from initial concept to successful execution. This includes developing project scope, equipment specifications, preliminary pricing, engineering drawings, project timelines, and budgets for all electrical, controls, instrumentation, and PLC/DCS components. Assess and confirm appropriate wire/conductor sizes, MCC bucket dimensions, VFD specifications, transformer, and substation sizing. Must accurately determine the necessary power requirements (480V, 240V, 110V, 24VDC) for all production and ancillary equipment involved in the project. Collaborate with and oversee the performance of external consulting engineering firms in the creation of detailed electrical, controls, instrumentation, and PLC/DCS design engineering drawings, specifications, and cost estimates. Review and validate all electrical drawings and calculations. Create electrical equipment specifications and data sheets, evaluate electrical drawings and schematics, and coordinate with stakeholders to finalize equipment selection, procurement, installation, and system commissioning. Supervise and inspect the electrical/controls installation of projects, working closely with electrical field personnel/contractors to address any design and drawing-related technical and performance issues for both capital projects and internal plant modifications. Engage in system start-up and troubleshooting for new and retrofitted equipment. Provide mentorship to junior engineers and on-site electricians.Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering 7-10 years of relevant industrial experience post-graduationExperience:
Preferred experience in industrial plants or design within corn wet milling, food production, chemical, or pharmaceutical sectors. Experience managing capital projects with values exceeding $10 million is preferred. Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously is essential.Essential Electrical Engineering Knowledge:
Power Distribution including MCCs, substations, transformers, lighting panels, and distribution panels. Control panels, HMIs, PLCs, Control Systems, and DCS Systems, including remote and flex I/O. Programming of PLC or DCS systems is not required. Building Systems including indoor/outdoor lighting, HVAC, fire protection, warehousing, and emergency/backup power. Instrumentation specification, wiring, calibration, and troubleshooting. Specification, procurement, installation, and oversight of Electrical/Controls/Instrumentation equipment. Knowledge of co-generation is preferred. Familiarity with completing electrical drawings and schematics in AutoCAD is preferred.Travel Requirements:
If based in Keokuk, assignments would be on-site 5 days a week. If based in Gurnee, project assignments may require up to 30% travel to the Keokuk site for several days at a time. Most travel will occur at the project's outset and during the start-up/commissioning phase. Extended work hours may be necessary during system start-up and commissioning.Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to communicate effectively. The employee frequently needs to stand, walk, climb stairs, use hands and fingers for handling or feeling, and reach with hands and arms; work in various environmental conditions.
