Position Overview:

The Senior Electrical Engineer will oversee technical support for the scoping, planning, design, and execution of on-site capital projects, guiding them from initial concept to final implementation. This role serves as the main liaison for external engineering firms, equipment vendors, and construction contractors regarding all electrical inquiries and challenges that arise during capital projects. The Senior Electrical Engineer will provide expert electrical engineering support for substantial capital projects encompassing production, maintenance, growth, regulatory, and environmental considerations.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead and manage the electrical engineering aspects of capital projects from inception to successful execution. This includes developing project scope, equipment specifications, preliminary pricing, engineering drawings, project timelines, and budgets for all electrical, controls, instrumentation, and PLC/DCS components. Assess and confirm appropriate wire/conductor sizes, MCC bucket sizes, VFD's, transformer, and substation dimensions. Must determine the correct power requirements (480V, 240V, 110V, 24VDC) for all production and ancillary equipment. Collaborate with and supervise the performance of external consulting engineering firms in creating detailed electrical, controls, instrumentation, and PLC/DCS design engineering documents, specifications, and cost estimates. Review and validate all electrical drawings and calculations. Develop specifications and data sheets for electrical equipment, review electrical schematics, and collaborate with teams to finalize equipment selection, procurement, installation, and system commissioning. Oversee and inspect the electrical/controls installation of projects, coordinating with field personnel/contractors to resolve any design and technical issues for both capital projects and internal modifications. Engage in system start-up and troubleshooting for new and retrofitted equipment. Mentor junior engineers and on-site electricians.

Qualifications:

Education:

Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering 7-10 years of relevant industrial experience post-graduation

Experience:

Preferred experience in industrial plants or design within corn wet milling, food production, chemical, or pharmaceutical sectors. Experience managing capital projects with values exceeding $10 million is preferred. Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously is essential.

Essential Electrical Engineering Knowledge:

Power Distribution systems including MCC's, substations, transformers, lighting panels, and distribution panels. Control panels, HMI's, PLC's, Control Systems, and DCS Systems including remote and flex I/O. Programming of PLC or DCS systems is not required. Building Systems knowledge including indoor/outdoor lighting, HVAC, fire protection, warehousing, and emergency/backup power. Instrumentation specification, wiring, calibration, and troubleshooting expertise. Specification, procurement, installation, and oversight of Electrical/Controls/Instrumentation equipment. Knowledge of co-generation systems is advantageous. Proficiency in completing electrical drawings and schematics using AutoCAD is preferred.

Travel Requirements:

If based in one location, assignments may require on-site presence for five days a week. Project assignments may necessitate travel to various sites for up to 30% of the time, primarily during the initial project phase and during start-up/commissioning stages. Extended work hours may be expected during system start-up and commissioning phases.

Physical Requirements:

The role requires the ability to communicate effectively. Frequent standing, walking, climbing stairs, and using hands and fingers to handle or feel are necessary, along with reaching with hands and arms. The position may involve working in environments that are hot, cold, or noisy.
