POSITION SUMMARY:
The Lead Educator, under the guidance of the Child Development Director and Site Director, is accountable for the comprehensive management of the classroom, ensuring a superior standard of education and care for young learners.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee daily classroom operations, including outdoor activities, utilizing positive discipline strategies to foster a secure and healthy environment.
- Serve diverse communities with equity, maintaining an inclusive and anti-racist perspective; cultivate a culture of respect and bravery within the organization.
- Design and execute developmentally suitable curricula, ensuring timely submission of necessary documentation and reports.
- Plan and document programs in alignment with state regulations.
- Maintain open communication with families and collaborate with colleagues to address the unique needs of each child.
- Participate actively in supervision, multi-component, and staff meetings.
- Assist in preparing materials, equipment, and information for daily activities, including tracking attendance and meal counts.
- Adhere to proper food handling, sanitation, and safety protocols at all times.
- Keep an Anecdotal Log for each enrolled child (Early Childhood Only).
- Conduct monthly safety drills, including fire and lockdown procedures.
- Ensure classroom and storage areas are organized, safe, and tidy.
- Exemplify YMCA core values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring, contributing to a trusting and supportive community.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding child and family information.
- Supervise a group of children effectively.
- Assist in upholding all center policies, state regulations, and NAEYC standards.
- Perform additional duties as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Early Childhood: Familiarity with infant and toddler development, Early Childhood Education principles, School Readiness, and Connecticut Early Learning and Development standards. School Age: Understanding of school-age development.
Possess a warm and nurturing demeanor.
Bilingual (Spanish/English) is advantageous.
This role may require access to protected Health Information (PHI) to fulfill specific job responsibilities.
Ability to work in preschool or school-age settings, potentially with children who have communicable diseases and disabilities.
Physical demands include working in outdoor environments, which may lack handicapped access.
Personal qualifications as stipulated in Part 407: Licensing Standards for Day Care Centers, including emotional maturity, cooperation with program objectives, respect for children and adults, flexibility, patience, good hygiene, and overall physical and mental health.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
OEC requirements include:
A minimum of twelve (12) credits in early childhood education or child development from an accredited institution, alongside at least one thousand and eighty (1,080) hours of documented supervised experience working with children under six years of age.
School Readiness Requirements for Early Childhood Only:
A Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field is required, along with a minimum of 12 early childhood credits. The Connecticut Early Childhood Teacher credential is necessary by the specified deadline.
EXPERIENCE:
Early Childhood: At least two years of relevant experience is required.
School-Aged Childcare: A minimum of one year of experience in early childhood settings is required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to supervise children through sight and sound, provide verbal guidance, and react swiftly to safety concerns.
Capacity to navigate the classroom effectively, assisting children with their daily activities and emotional needs, which may involve physical movement such as sitting on the floor, bending, or lifting.
Ability to lift young children and objects weighing up to 40 lbs.
