The primary responsibility of the Museum Security Officer is to safeguard the physical security and safety of the Museum's visitors, staff, and collection. This is achieved by vigilant monitoring for potential threats and responding appropriately in accordance with Museum protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage and operate all electronic surveillance systems within the security control center.
- Continuously monitor displays for access control, environmental management, fire safety, and security surveillance.
- Identify normal and abnormal equipment conditions, knowing how to react when situations deviate from established norms.
- Address all incidents occurring within the museum as outlined in the Security Department Policy Manual and related guidelines.
- Oversee the entry and exit of all personnel and visitors, adhering to established Museum policies.
- Provide physical security during special events, ensuring the safety of the collection, staff, and guests.
- Conduct inspections of the facility to detect and mitigate existing or potential security, injury, or health risks.
- Utilize two-way radios for effective communication with fellow staff members.
- Respond to inquiries and concerns from visitors and staff in a timely and respectful manner, maintaining confidentiality as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned or required.

A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred. A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required, with a preference for candidates with a background in security. Dependability, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic are essential. Effective communication skills in both written and spoken English are necessary. Flexibility in scheduling, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, is required. The ability to work collaboratively and independently with minimal supervision is important, as is the capacity to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Work Environment:
This position primarily involves indoor work in a busy office setting, subject to frequent interruptions. However, it also requires conducting rounds and outdoor activities, including in adverse weather conditions. As this role is critical to the Museum's operations, employees may need to extend their hours during emergencies and are expected to report to work during inclement weather. Physical Demands:
The role requires intermittent sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods, potentially up to six hours without relief. Candidates may need to respond quickly to incidents, which could involve running. Specific vision requirements include close, distance, and peripheral vision, along with the ability to adjust focus. Full dexterity in hands and fingers is necessary for operating controls and locks, some of which may be positioned above. Occasional lifting or moving of up to 50 pounds or more with assistance may be required.
