Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Diagnostic Medical Sonographer to join our team at Brigham and Women's Hospital. As a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, you will be responsible for performing ultrasound examinations and providing high-quality images to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform ultrasound examinations on patients of all ages, including premature infants, using various imaging techniques and equipment.
  • Obtain and review patient medical history, test results, and laboratory data to ensure accurate interpretation of ultrasound images.
  • Explain exam procedures to patients, taking into consideration their physical and emotional needs, and maintain confidentiality and professional conduct.
  • Deliver patient care under the scope of your license and training, utilizing universal precaution techniques and safety protocols.
  • Rotate within the department, divisions, and off-site clinics, as required, and maintain effective working relations and communication with departmental and hospital personnel.
  • Execute paperwork, PACS, RIS, and reporting functions as necessary for each patient exam, and prepare equipment, rooms, and supplies for each patient and regular daily use.
  • May oversee and instruct various personnel and technology students within the department, and participate in research programs, quality assurance, and quality improvement projects.
  • Assume on-call coverage and remain flexible in shift coverage and overtime situations, as necessary.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an AMA-accredited Ultrasound Program with a minimum of 12 months' full-time clinical ultrasound experience.
  • Meet the requirements and successfully complete the ARDMS certification (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers) or equivalent.
  • Become registered in all institution-accredited specialties, with the first specialty or additional specialty completed within one year of start of employment.
  • Second specialty within two years of employment, and additional specialties as required by the accreditation agency.
Skills and Abilities
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.
  • Analytical abilities necessary to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of imaging processes, techniques, and procedures, and cross-sectional anatomy.
  • Ability to adapt to changing pace within the department, with frequent interruptions.
  • Presents a positive attitude and a professional appearance.
  • Physically capable of lifting (linen, supplies, patients, etc.).
  • Comprehensive understanding of the Radiology Information System and Hospital Information System for registering patients.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to adapt to diverse roles as a member of the department team.
  • Aware of hazards within the department, adhere to safety standards established by Brigham and Women's Hospital and other regulatory agencies.
Working Conditions

Normal teaching clinical hospital environment. Exposure to high-frequency sound waves. Possibility of contact with infectious diseases and bodily fluids. Standing and walking most of the day.
