Position Overview: Chief Executive Officer

The Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) is in search of a visionary leader, adept in fundraising, community engagement, and animal welfare advocacy, to guide the organization through a pivotal growth phase. The incoming CEO will cultivate and strengthen relationships with a diverse array of stakeholders, including staff, the Board of Directors, volunteers, government representatives, community partners, and donors, both locally and beyond.

In partnership with these key players, the new CEO will spearhead strategic initiatives designed to foster growth and innovation, while enhancing AWLA's overarching vision and impact. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the CEO will lead a team of dedicated professionals, including:

  • Chief Operating Officer
  • Director of Development
  • Director of Finance & Administration
  • Director of Human Resources

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

Work collaboratively with the Board to establish a clear vision and direction for programmatic, policy, and organizational advancement.

Support Board functions and assist in recruitment and engagement initiatives.

Fundraising Initiatives

Partner with the Board and development team to attract new donors. Sustain donor relationships and innovate fundraising strategies to enhance financial stability, including major gifts and planned giving programs.

Lead the creation of capital campaigns, working with relevant stakeholders to achieve financial goals.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) & Team Management

Promote a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace through policy implementation and DEI training programs. Encourage continuous learning and development opportunities for staff and volunteers.

Ensure transparent communication regarding decisions that affect staff and the organization. Develop and implement effective management procedures and fiscal accountability practices.

Exemplify professional standards and practices, leading by example to foster staff development aligned with AWLA's mission.

Accountability and Operational Excellence

Oversee AWLA's budget and strategic planning to ensure financial integrity and optimal resource allocation.

Assess program effectiveness and community needs to set short-term objectives and plans. Collaborate with staff to explore potential programs that enhance AWLA's impact.

Drive continuous improvement by implementing best practices and nurturing a culture of innovation and efficiency.

Standardize processes across the organization to improve operational effectiveness and ensure consistency.

Public Relations and Community Engagement

Serve as AWLA's spokesperson, advocating for its mission and goals to a diverse audience. Represent AWLA at local, regional, and national levels.

Collaborate with local government staff to meet contractual obligations.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Extensive executive leadership experience with a proven track record of driving organizational growth, preferably in a senior capacity.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, including donor cultivation and solicitation. Experience leading capital campaigns is highly desirable.
  • A genuine passion for and commitment to the mission of AWLA.
  • Experience managing essential executive functions such as strategy, finance (including budgets exceeding $5 million), operations, communications, and fundraising, ideally within a non-profit context.
  • A history of leading teams and fostering a compassionate organizational culture.
  • Expertise in driving continuous improvement, standardizing processes, and enhancing operational effectiveness to ensure efficiency and consistency.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences and maintain organizational relationships.
  • A welcoming attitude towards diverse perspectives and groups.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the Northern Virginia and D.C. Metropolitan area.
  • Experience in animal welfare and open admission humane societies or animal control sectors.
  • Experience in creating, reviewing, and analyzing financial statements, disclosures, and audits.
