Role Summary

The Preschool Special Needs Educator (PSNE) plays a crucial role in the comprehensive oversight and management of their designated classroom, employing developmentally suitable methodologies. This position includes the supervision of Early Learning Center Teacher Assistants and Aides. The PSNE is tasked with the planning, execution, and management of educational initiatives tailored to address the unique needs of children with disabilities in a preschool environment. The focus is on cultivating a nurturing and inclusive classroom atmosphere that encourages learning, social engagement, and skill enhancement. The PSNE collaborates with colleagues to ensure that educational content and classroom activities are effectively delivered, meeting both student needs and center objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Individualized Education Plans (IEPs): Formulate and execute IEPs for each child with special needs, customizing instructional approaches and curriculum to meet specific learning objectives.
  • Inclusive Education: Create an inclusive classroom setting that values diversity and accommodates various learning styles. Modify teaching techniques, resources, and activities to support all students.
  • Curriculum Design: Develop and implement a curriculum that is developmentally appropriate and aligns with educational standards while catering to the distinct needs of children with special requirements.
  • Assessment and Monitoring: Conduct regular assessments to track student progress, utilizing data to refine teaching strategies and identify areas needing additional support.
  • Behavioral Management: Apply behavior management techniques to address challenging behaviors and foster positive social interactions, collaborating with parents and support staff for consistency.
  • Communication: Maintain open and effective communication with parents, guardians, and support staff, providing updates on student progress and sharing home strategies.
  • Resource Management: Utilize assistive technologies and adaptive tools to enhance learning and skill development.
  • Collaboration: Work in partnership with other professionals, including speech and occupational therapists, to provide comprehensive support for each child.
  • Safety and Welfare: Ensure the physical and emotional safety of all students, adhering to health and safety protocols and responding appropriately to emergencies.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Oversee and mentor classroom staff, including teachers and aides.
  • Develop staffing schedules and manage coverage for absences in collaboration with other lead educators.
  • Assist in the recruitment and selection of new staff members.
  • Provide constructive feedback to classroom personnel regarding performance and compliance with regulations.
  • Participate in performance evaluations and make recommendations for staff management.
  • Act as the lead in the absence of the Early Learning Center Director.
  • Engage with children at their level, employing appropriate guidance techniques to maintain a positive classroom environment.
  • Prepare and implement weekly lesson plans and activities.
  • Establish daily schedules and routines that meet program and child needs.
  • Evaluate each child's skills and progress according to established timelines.
  • Maintain required staff-to-child ratios, ensuring proper supervision.
  • Manage daily documentation, including attendance and incident reports.
  • Display children's work and maintain bulletin boards that reflect a diverse and inclusive curriculum.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety standards.
  • Participate in strategic planning for the Early Learning Center.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of materials and equipment.
  • Serve meals in accordance with nutritional guidelines.
  • Attend required training sessions and meetings.
  • Exhibit reliable attendance and punctuality.
Regulatory Compliance:
  • Complete 24 hours of training annually, including First Aid and CPR, child health and safety, and child development.
  • Maintain current certifications in CPR and food handling.
  • Assist in fire drill and evacuation procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with staff-to-child ratios.
  • Report any suspected child abuse or neglect as mandated.
Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
  • High School diploma or proof of enrollment.
  • Preferred: 1 year of supervisory experience.
  • 1 year of experience working with preschool-aged children with special needs.
  • Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Special Education, or a related field.
  • State certification in Special Education or Early Childhood Education.
  • Knowledge of various disabilities and developmental disorders.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to provide a nurturing and supportive environment.
  • Proficiency in developing and implementing IEPs.
  • Class I Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Negative TB test results.
  • Food Handler Certification.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Verification of immunizations.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of child care licensing regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Effective communication with staff, parents, and children.
  • Physical capability to engage with children and perform necessary tasks.
  • Flexibility in scheduling and attendance at required events.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands of this role include the ability to sit, stand, walk, and lift up to 50 pounds. The educator must be able to bend, kneel, and engage with children at their level. Adequate hand-eye coordination and hearing are necessary for effective communication and task performance.

Work Environment:
This position is set in a classroom environment, both indoors and outdoors, with moderate to high noise levels and potential exposure to health hazards.
