About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative Senior Research and Development Chemist to join our FCC R&D Exploratory and New Product Development Group (E&NPD) at Ketjen Corporation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage all aspects related to the operation of the exploratory screening reactor systems, including sample preparation, operation, method development, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Support the construction or modification of reactor systems and other specialty instruments for screening properties and performance of catalytic materials.
  • Independently develop and maintain gas chromatography methods designed to quantify product streams.
  • Laboratory ownership with responsibilities that include ensuring safe operations, housekeeping, chemical inventory, work order notifications, and writing of work permits.
  • Streamline lab operations to improve efficiency. Define and install safety systems.
  • Work with data infrastructure teams to automate data acquisition, processing, transfer, and reporting.
  • Diligently troubleshoot issues to minimize equipment downtime. Develop and execute a preventative maintenance program for the equipment in the lab.
  • Train technician personnel and write standard operating procedures.
  • Support material synthesis activities within the E&NPD laboratories using variable ingredients and preparation methods.
  • Lead research projects for method development.
  • Lead capability improvement efforts including execution of capital projects.
  • Prepare technical presentations to showcase laboratory capability and method development/improvements.
Desired Qualifications
  • BS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related disciplines from an accredited university.
  • 5+ years of prior work experience in industrial or academic setting.
  • Previous laboratory management experience.
  • Strong teamwork and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving abilities.
  • Prior experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • GC and GC-MS operation/maintenance, method development, and troubleshooting
    • Reactor operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting
    • Evaluation of performance and kinetics of heterogenous catalysis and/or hydrocarbon reaction chemistry
    • Characterization of material properties and surface chemistry
  • Hands-on experience in start-up and commissioning of new lab or pilot plant equipment is a plus
  • Demonstrated experience in application of statistical methods, control charts, and data science is a plus
  • Programming, automation, AI and/or machine learning expertise is a plus.
