Austin, Texas, United States Tesla Full time

Tesla is seeking an experienced Industrial Hygienist to manage health risks associated with battery and vehicle manufacturing. The ideal candidate will use their technical knowledge and leadership skills to drive engineering solutions upstream into factory design, construction, commissioning, and production processes.

The candidate will serve as a subject matter expert for EHS and engineering partners, working cross-functionally to integrate appropriate safeguards and controls into the factory system.

While serving Tesla's mission, the Industrial Hygienist will ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental health and safety requirements, as well as conformance to internal EHS policies, standards, and systems.

This role is based out of Tesla's manufacturing facility in Austin, TX and is part of Tesla's Global Environmental Health, Safety, and Security (EHS&S) team.

Responsibilities
  • Complete health risk assessments and industrial hygiene (IH) analyses for materials with and without consensus occupational exposure limits, reporting results to both engineering and operations audiences.
  • Provide problem-solving support on the floor and in design reviews, working hand-in-hand with cross-functional teams to manage health, environment, and operational risks.
  • Produce structured reports, training, and other written communications to share IH matters and engage the workforce, engineering, and management teams.
  • Determine appropriate levels of engineering, administrative, or PPE control for chemical, radiological, or noise concerns; verify control effectiveness and lead continuous improvement initiatives as appropriate.
  • Integrate IH work into the EHS Management System and overall industrial hygiene program, partnering with affected Tesla EHS teams to ensure sustained success.
  • Assist with medical surveillance compliance, and manage third-party consultants, lab testing, purchase orders, and project budgets as needed.
  • Occasional travel as needed to support the business, collaborate on IH programs with other EHS staff, and support professional development.
Requirements
  • Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Toxicology, Health Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, Occupational Health and Safety, or related Health discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years' experience preferred. Experience as an industrial hygienist or IH-focused EHS professional in a manufacturing or facility design and construction setting.
  • Knowledge in the art of anticipation, identification, assessment, and control of chemical and physical hazards along with ability to engage stakeholders critical to sustained IH risk management.
  • Experience designing or facilitating chemical or physical exposure controls through substitution or engineering methods, such as using ventilation, enclosures, damping, and process efficiencies.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, SharePoint, and success using Occupational Health databases and applications.
  • Experience with operation of medical surveillance and related programs including respirator medical clearance, audiometry, and substance-specific examinations.
  • Capable of working in a construction and manufacturing environment on your feet with stair and occasional ladder climbing as well as respirator and related PPE usage.
