Position Overview:

The Exceptional Needs Educator is primarily tasked with the effective instruction and learning of designated subject areas in accordance with district-approved curriculum, instructional methodologies, and assessment practices. This role may involve teaching in various elementary and/or secondary educational environments, including but not limited to Life Skills, Behavioral Development, Structured Communication, and Learning Resource/Support. The primary focus is on ensuring student safety and fostering appropriate collaboration while addressing each student's readiness to learn, including necessary guidance, discipline, and welfare.

Supervision:

This educator operates with a significant degree of independence and professional judgment under the general oversight of a designated school administrator. Direction and/or supervision may also be provided by a district special education administrator. The educator's responsibilities are governed by established professional practices, school and district policies, and regulations, as well as the provisions outlined in the district's policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Plan for student success based on individual assessments and utilize data to gauge each student's current knowledge and skill level, set learning objectives, and evaluate student progress. Employ district-approved assessment tools and strategies as part of this planning process, ensuring compliance with Individual Education Program (IEP) and 504 accommodation requirements.
  2. Collaborate within a professional learning community with fellow educators, support staff, multidisciplinary teams, and others as necessary to address student needs and develop effective teaching practices.
  3. Conduct lesson planning using accepted professional practices (content, goals, assessment, re-teaching, etc.) that align with school/district-approved curriculum and instructional methods. Incorporate research-based instructional strategies to enhance relevance for students.
  4. Maintain meaningful student grading and evaluation in accordance with district policy, effectively communicating this information to students and parents. This may include regular updates to electronic grade systems accessible to parents and students.
  5. Integrate district-approved technology into planning, learning, progress reporting, and record-keeping activities, including the preparation of IEPs for students with special needs.
  6. Establish and uphold classroom management practices that actively engage students in the learning process, ensuring that acceptable behavior and related disciplinary procedures are clearly understood and consistently enforced.
  7. Participate actively in faculty and departmental meetings, assisting in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the school's programs while applying school policies and procedures.
  8. Remain vigilant to the needs and challenges faced by students, promptly engaging an administrator or appropriate educational staff when concerns arise regarding student safety or well-being.
  9. Supervise students during school activities and events, maintaining awareness throughout the school day and intervening when necessary to address inappropriate behavior.
  10. Reflect on professional practice to develop a professional growth plan, reviewing progress with the administrator annually.
  11. Adhere to board policies and procedures, staying informed of updates and changes.
  12. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's and/or master's degree
  • Valid teaching certification issued by NM PED
  • Demonstrated knowledge of subjects/levels being taught
  • Ability to communicate effectively with parents, students, and staff both verbally and in writing
