The Pediatric Pain Rehabilitation Center at Boston Children's Hospital provides a comprehensive day treatment program tailored for children and adolescents aged 8 to 17 who suffer from chronic pain and face challenges in daily activities after unsuccessful outpatient interventions. This program operates under a day-hospital rehabilitation model, accommodating up to eight children and their families simultaneously.

Responsibilities of the Physical Therapist - Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation Program include: Conducting intricate diagnostic assessments based on physician referrals and adhering to departmental and professional standards. Ensuring the validity of referrals by liaising with healthcare providers as necessary. Analyzing patient medical histories and selecting, administering, and interpreting a wide array of standardized and non-standardized assessments to evaluate patients' functional capabilities concerning cardiopulmonary, developmental, musculoskeletal, neurological, and sensorimotor functions.
Demonstrating advanced clinical reasoning in the creation and execution of personalized treatment plans for patients with complex, rare, or multiple conditions. Establishing treatment priorities and applying suitable physical therapy techniques and modalities to achieve set objectives. Formulating discharge plans and home treatment strategies while providing education and guidance to patients and their families.
Employing sophisticated clinical reasoning for the selection and customization of orthotics, adaptive/assistive devices, and technologies for patients, particularly those with intricate, rare, or multiple conditions. Aligning patient and family goals with specific treatment targets. Collaborating with equipment designers and suppliers to ensure equipment meets patient requirements.
Documenting evaluations, diagnoses, and treatment strategies in patient medical records in accordance with established documentation protocols. Compiling reports, correspondence, referrals, and other necessary documentation for educational institutions, healthcare providers, payors, and other stakeholders. Assigning appropriate billing codes and charges for reimbursement purposes.
Actively pursuing professional development by engaging in professional organizations, attending continuing education sessions, and utilizing various internal and external resources. Integrating ongoing professional growth into clinical practice and disseminating knowledge within the department.
Participating in departmental training and staff development initiatives. Serving as a mentor and clinical instructor for new physical therapist staff and student externs. Potentially acting as a mentor and faculty member for the clinical residency program.
Supervising assigned direct reports, including physical therapist I, physical therapist assistants, and rehabilitation aides.
Ensuring a safe working environment and engaging in additional duties as required to support the department's daily operations. Required qualifications include:
  • Bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy
  • Valid state licensure in Physical Therapy
  • Preferred experience in pediatric physical therapy
