Job Summary

This position serves as a Laboratory Supervisor, overseeing the day-to-day operations of laboratory sections and shifts. Under the direction of the Laboratory Director and/or Laboratory Manager, the successful candidate will coordinate and manage laboratory activities, ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies and implementing quality control measures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day supervision of laboratory testing personnel, ensuring high, moderate, and waived complexity test performance meets expectations.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and standards promulgated by state and federal agencies, the hospital, and other regulatory entities.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate work activities of assigned sections and shifts, maintaining accurate attendance records and time and attendance records.
  • Assist the Director/Manager in maintaining the Laboratory budget, analyzing expense detail, and reporting variance.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain current procedural manuals of all tests performed in assigned sections, updating and reviewing manuals biennially or more often as necessary.
  • Enforce all safety policies and procedures, researching, evaluating, and implementing new and improved procedures, methodologies, instrumentation, and techniques as assigned.
  • Implement an appropriate section and/or shift-specific Quality Control Program, maintaining all applicable Quality Control and Functional Verification records.
  • Monitor test analyses and specimen examinations, ensuring acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained, and referring clinical problems to the laboratory director, manager, or supervisor as appropriate.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot all equipment in assigned sections, making minor repairs and adjustments when necessary, and initiating and following through with Biomedical Engineering/equipment manufacturer for safety checks and repairs.
  • Prepare and submit routine or special administrative and technical reports by due dates as required, requested, or delegated.
  • Order and maintain inventories for all necessary supplies and reagents in assigned sections, ensuring an adequate amount is always on hand.
  • Train new technologists and technicians in assigned section procedures and policies, providing subsequent training in all new or revised procedures and techniques for assigned shifts or providing remedial training as necessary.
  • Assist the Director/Manager in designing, implementing, collecting, and analyzing data, and reporting all phases of a comprehensive performance improvement program that involves laboratory personnel in Performance Improvement activities.
  • Prepare and conduct in-service education either formally or informally for assigned sections and shifts.
  • Provide input on personnel for hire, fire, transfer, interview, disciplinary probation, etc., counseling and documenting technical deficiencies.
  • Perform skills review and competency assessments, maintaining appropriate documentation on all technical personnel as delegated by the Laboratory Manager/Director.
  • Oversee and enforce expectations of personnel in assigned sections.
  • Participate in proficiency testing surveys, reviewing and evaluating results, and maintaining copies of survey records in sections.
  • Coordinate and attend meetings as required to discuss changes and developments regarding policies, equipment, procedures, staffing, etc.
  • Utilize and have a thorough working knowledge of the Laboratory Information System and applications thereof.
  • Demonstrate competence to perform assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets the population-specific and developmental needs of patients served by the department.
  • Appropriately adapt assigned patient assessment, treatment, and/or care methods to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age-specific, and other developmental needs of each patient served.
  • Process patient specimens, including collection, handling, and distribution, always cognizant of minimal pediatric specimen volumes (when required).
  • Perform all routine and complicated laboratory procedures in the primary section to which assigned, about age (pedi) or sex-specific values.
  • Provide notification and documentation of critical laboratory values obtained.
  • Calculate, enter, and/or verify results of laboratory procedures.
  • Perform all duties in a manner that protects the confidentiality of patients and does not solicit or disclose any confidential information unless it is necessary for the performance of assigned job duties.
  • Keep abreast of Medical Technology, by reading Journals, texts, and technical bulletins, attending workshops and seminars, and becoming active in local professional associations.
